They work on moderation management rather than an abstention so you should be OK.

Sadly moderation is not a word my brain understands in any shape or form! So many addictions so little time...

              Glutamine: Precursor to GABA

Glutamine in an amino acid that is a major precursor for the neurotransmitter, GABA, or gamma amino butyric acid, and is especially important when the body is subjected to stressful situations. It has been stated that when there is no GABA, there is no calm and no sleep because the brain will not "turn off".

A Conditionally Essential Amino Acid: Glutamine

Glutamine is considered a "conditionally essential amino acid" because, although it can be manufactured in the body, under extreme physical or emotional stress the demand for glutamine exceeds the body's ability to synthesize it.

Unlike glutamic acid, glutamine crosses the blood-brain barrier easily, readily reaching the central nervous system (CNS) for use.

It is a potent energy source and is vital for high energy activities, such as exercise and projects requiring concentrated thinking and memory. Therefore, it is essential for supplying both the body and brain with energy.

              Glutamine and Anxiety

Glutamine is an all-natural, anti-anxiety supplement that allows the mind to relax without causing the side effects sometimes associated with tranquilizers. It "tones down" unwanted "mind chatter," which sharpens a person's ability to focus and concentrate with more clarity or simply relax.

Why not use GABA instead of L-Glutamine?

While l-glutamine is an all-natural product, an ingredient by the name of GABA is a synthetic product that increases calm in the neurotransmitter by the same name.

The problem with using this synthetic product is that your body responds to it like it would any other external chemical source it increases the activity of the neurotransmitter gamma amino butyric acid, but does nothing to actually build or replenish it. The only way to naturally build the brain chemical GABA is through nutrition or through the use of the amino acid l-glutamine.

People who are taking the product GABA will get a temporary calm, but will eventually need to change to l-glutamine to rebuild the GABA levels naturally.

Always remember, before any nutritional supplement, including amino acids, consult your health care professional first.

Wow, more interesting stuff. I took GABA for a while too, and it did help I think, but its a fairly expensive supplement in comparison to Lglut and I also had concerns about whether it actually did cross the blood / brain barrier as I read some evidence to suggest it might not.

                  Thankgoodness for the spammer....!!

else this thread would've dropped down into oblivion, it's got so much info thats not covered in such depth and simple common sense language on other threads and comments of experience of usage is so valuable.

This thread should be notice pin boarded, like the swimming pool thead and starts' rain in my heart thread, all excellent and should be held on the main index, available for newbies coming in, all good neccesary reading for any first timer. I don't think it really belongs being mixed in with "other meds" thread

So if a moderator is reading this... can it be possible please???????????

So do you think l glut is okay with prozac? I too am on 40mg and struggling, need to up it more or try something else, and I would much prefer it to be natural.

Thanks once again for all the info

Absolutely. The reasearch suggests People on AD's should take even more than the bog standard alkie!! You can get it at most health shops (often in the body building/sports nutrition section). The bottle I have at the moment was $17.50 and has 60 capsules and each capsule has 1,000mg (balance muscle technology brand). You can take up to 6mg a day that is 2 capsules three times a day and if you have a bad craving you can take extra - in an emergency just break open the capsule and just eat or swallow the powder and that helps take the edge off a bad craving.

Awesome, I will try it, because those cravings sure get bad at times! its a hell of a lot of pill taking but its got to be worth it. Does it wear off pretty quickly?? ie, if you forget a dose or two do you immediately feel it, and is it something that you have to take for a while and build up in your system before you get the benefits? I guess Im really reffering to its half life, its sounds like it must be short acting if you need to take it three times a day??

Thanks boozyhag, love the name, its classic!

Well compared to pouring two or three bottles of wine down my neck two or three times a week and smoking 20+ ciggy's at the same time taking a few pills is easy peasy especially when it helps so much!! The MWO program includes taking a lot of supplements and not just the l-glut which leads me to think that you may not have read RJ's book. You should read it (download it from website) as it will explain a lot about the program and the importance of supplements many of which are depleted through alcohol abuse. Anyway with the l-glut I think lots of people myself included take it for cravings rather than at predetermined times. Some people swear by it (like me) others dont find it great but its worth a try and not a big investment money wise.

Oh and in response to your specific questions its more like a food than a drug so it does not wear off as such and it is very fast acting hence the help with strong cravings - you basically eat it and then you use it as an energy source (a calming one). Once you start taking it you will quickly figure out whether it is helpful or not but just make sure you take enough to have effect you need quite a big dose to start with - you can get it in a drink powder too but I prefer the capsules. When I quit drinking first I used to take 2/3 capsules at wine o'clock (3,000mg) and then take more over the course of the evening as I needed it - I just carried it around in my pocket - a lot lighter than a plastic bag with three bottles of wine!! It does all depend on your own particular pattern and stage of problem drinking - I was binge drinker rather daily drinker so I found it helped counteract my particular binge triggers and also kept my blood sugar level so cravings were not as intense.

Hmmm its all interesting stuff. I will definately give it a try. I did try Bac for help with cravings etc, sadly it did not agree with me, so Im all for any help I can get. So have you completely kicked the habit?? I too am a miss bingey, however my binges are horrific and coming closer and closer together. At least 3x per week, the rest of time is recovery. Wine time or the witching hour tomorrow and Im gonna try that Glut. Thanks boozy you have given me new hope when before I was gutted about the failing of Bac.
