        Amino Acids, The Mood Cure

Thanks everyone for taking the time to put all this terrific information out there!

Have known a lot of this for years and also had the Atkins experience etc... but these posts have clarified so many things for me SO much more!!

I ordered Amino Complete (missed it for ages) and got mine last Tuesday, took 6 straight away and have been powering ever since. I've never worked out the L-glut & L-tryp dosages so just took handfulls of the Amino Complete - that works for me.

But now I understand a bit better, I might try to be more specific. Any advice on where to get L-tryptophan in Australia Boozy? It was banned last time I asked. Also, have had extremely negative reactions from healthfood shops & homeopaths etc when I ask about amino acid therapy.. as it is total taboo.

I got told off today by a friend when I admitted to taking a melatonin (a one-off) to help me sleep the other night - they said I shouldn't be messing around with neurotransmitters. (That person has smoked pot for last 35 yrs so I don't seriously think I can do much worse!) Nevertheless, I think I want to look seriously into what I can do with my diet to get as much from my food as I can instead of using the supps.

He made me nervous so I cut back to only 2 twice today and feel less happy & had cravings this afternoon. Thank goodness I took the time to read this thread properly. So am hoping there is no harm in me taking 6 twice a day tomorrow.

I've found I really have to listen to my own body. And you're not "messing" with neurotransmitters - when these things are already messed up, you are correcting them. I've always found I can tell which supplements to take or not take - that is, if you feel better on one, or another makes you jittery instead, you can pretty much tell what you're missing or what you don't need. Same with diet - after Thanksgiving, I had all the leftovers, a lot of which are sugary or more refined carbs than I'm used to, and boy did I feel it. If I don't get my heavy protein diet, I feel anxious, depressed, cranky, slow, stupid. Food is fuel, and we have to put the right gas in the tank. That includes the right supplements (amino acids, etc) if needed. A lot of us are depleted, don't know it, and end up on a vicious cycle or trying to feel better by using sugar or AL or whatever, deplete ourselves more, and end up feeling worse. So believe what your own body tells you, you're the one has to live in it.

Yes Starty, I take them first thing in the morning and again before lunch or dinner. I took 4 amino complete this morning! Is that OK? Do you eat first?

Thanks Dancelot.. you are right, I am going to get back on the Atkins diet (healthy version) which was the only time I felt really good in years - another thing everybody tut-tutted over and told me was dangerous. It got a lot of bad press but I used to eat fruit/and or salad with every meal once the initial induction phase was over and I ate constantly.

Was diagnosed as hypoglycemic in my 20's and under a dietitian's direction was made to eat a no-fat, no-sugar, high protein diet. It had carbs but plenty protein in every meal and I was made to eat no less than every two hours. On that diet and on Atkins I lost weight and my skin, eyes, hair & general wellbeing improved dramatically.

In my drawer I still have a big bottle of MWO L-Glut and am unsure after reading Booz's posts about how that will fit in but I'm figuring if I'm not doing this primarily for weight loss it may not matter? In the past L-Glut put my teeth on edge so I did not take it much. Also, could not get L-tryptophan here. Amino Complete is the only source I can find so it is my 'cure-all'.

Also have a big bottle of GABA - might try taking a bit of that before bedtime as I find in my new AF state with aminos I am pretty charged up most of the time. Any words of wisdom on GABA most welcome.

Not sure what the dosages in the Amino complete are I take all one usually. Yep I take it on an empty stomach mixed with juice.
Lglut I add to the mix too, I think it really does help to keep my more stable in every way.

I take Gaba when I am feeling on the edge, not so often any more, I take it with True calm and get a bit of a flush from that combo, I quite like it though :-)

                  Thank God I read this.
No wonder my bloody L-Glutamine's not working. I'm not taking nearly enough.
And why have I not thought to be taking it at wine-o-clock ? Duh .....
Time to read the book again.

Bridge, not sure that all this is in the book, but read the articles on here. I never knew quite how important Lglut was in the amounts that we need.

I did not mean l-glut would stop a from person losing weight. It is actually used to help with food cravings for people with eating disorders so it would most definitely help with general weight loss. I just meant that if you are on a zero/low carb diet and going for ketosis and you take l-glut for the carb/sugar cravings it might kick you out of ketosis but it does not necessarily mean you are not still burning fat and losing weight. I just found that interesting as it explained to me the connection between sugar/carbs/AL cravings and why l-glut helps with those cravings.
It is an essential amino acid that has been depleted in people who drink heavily so even if it doesnt seem to help with AL cravings it is still very good for you regardless and is also helpful for mood, energy and SAD as well. So load up on it and it definitely works best on an empty stomach so about an hour before meals is best I find.

The difference between l-tryptophan and 5 - htp

L-Tryptophan is the amino acid from which your body produces 5-HTP, the neurotransmitters Serotonin and Melatonin, and a vast array of proteins, enzymes, and other essential biochemicals your body needs. L-Tryptophan, as such, cannot be replaced by any other amino acid, herb, vitamin, mineral, or man-made chemical.

L-Tryptophan is an essential (aromatic) amino acid that must be included in your diet. For this reason, L-Tryptophan is commonly added to baby formulas and to hospital intravenous solutions, where it is clearly essential for growth and survival.

L-Tryptophan has long been used by doctors to treat a variety of deficiency symptoms, especially physical and emotional disorders such as those found in Serotonin Deficiency Syndrome (SDS). These symptoms include nervousness, anxiety, sleep disorders, mood disorders, and excessive appetite. According to medical research, L-Tryptophan is the amino acid most commonly deficient in our diet.

When L-Tryptophan is taken without protein or competing amino acids, more L-Tryptophan is able to pass through to the brain.

An enzyme in your body converts L-Tryptophan to 5-HTP, so 5-HTP is merely a stepping stone in the production of Serotonin and Melatonin. While it is true that 5-HTP converts more quickly to Serotonin than L-Tryptophan, 5-HTP has far fewer functions in the body than L-Tryptophan and cannot replace L-Tryptophan.

Yes you could take GABA to calm you down if you get too wound up from the Amino complete which usually happens in the early stages of AF as it settles down after a while. That is what the GABA is for as far as I know. You could also maybe just take the extra l-glut if/when you get AL cravings as there is already some l-glutamic acid in the Amino complete (and it also has l-tryptophan in it).

                              Hey thanks M,
Just realised you've answered my question on 5-HTP above before I even asked it tonight.. or maybe I asked it last night.. sorry, am tired & muddled. Will re-read tomorrow but am already much clearer on what I'm doing. Am lucky as the amino's seem to have totally erased all cravings.. Except for a blinding flash if under extreme pressure.. (like this afternoon at work) but then I answered it with "there is no way I'm going to give in" and went and took my emergency L-Glut. I feel fully supported now I know what I'm doing.
                              Thanks so much guys!!
