    PARANOIA

    Hi guys

    Am I mad?

As a person who is definitely not physically addicted to alcohol but has ritually drunk too much in one session for probably ten plus years (now 34), have reached conclusion need to stop....its going fine, but my question is this...

Do any of you see what might be a sign of alcohol abuse on the body (in my case a few thread veins on the nose) and start frantically looking up signs of Cirrhosis etc on the net and convincing yourself its all over for you?????

    Or Am I mad??

Please don't do that to yourself. Focus on today and the positives. Unless you seriously have discomfort and need to see a doctor don't send yourself into a panic.

I know in my logical mind you are right.....my intelligent side agrees with you and would give this advise to others. This is what makes it hard that I am not being logical about this. I suppose I just wandered if it hits others this way ever.....

      Thanks for your reply Beaches

          Mood,

Why not go to Doc for a physical? Run liver test ect. Then you would know. "worry is interest we pay on things yet to happen."

I know this would be the sensible option.....I guess just working my way up to it.....scared of outcome...suppose this is normal when one finally faces the reality of what is going on.

Hey Moo! I look up EVERY symptom I have, and usually scare myself silly, so you're not alone! My last google was fatty liver. I'm much better at getting myself checked out than I used to be, so have to find other things to obsess about.

moo, keep taking the milk thistle wait a few weeks and get a test. you'll be fine. are you able to get a test without going to the dr. i did that before my physical and blood work and it put my mind at ease. when i was trying to get a lab and pay our of pocket, i also found this website in the uk where you can get tested at home Liver Function Test

I still think you should go to your dr and get a blood test. hope this helps

Moo if it's any comfort to you I know we are all different but I'm ten years older than you and have been hammering the hell out of my liver for a long time. My test was fine! I was slightly surprised!

The other thing about the liver is that it is the only organ in the body that can regenerate itself; I have met many people in rehab whose livers were bad at the beginning of their detox but after two months were back to normal. The younger you are, the more likely this is. So even if you have a problem, it can be undone. Great news! Obviously I'm not saying any of this to encourage you that AL is OK, just wanted to let you know the liver is a powerful organ so try not to worry too much.

As others have said, milk thistle helps to detox as well.

                            PARANOIA

I'm sort of where you are ... I was worried about my anxiety and alcohol use and actually went to the doctor ... In the back of my mind, I was thinking everything would just come up "normal" on the blood tests she sent me for .. I mean, things have always worked out for me, etc. etc.

So I went and had the blood tests and got the call back. I went in and she sat me down and showed me the liver test #s ... They weren't good. I got scared.

She calmed me a bit by saying that my blood pressure was perfect, cholesterol and blood sugar too, and I had no other "signs" ... but the liver enzyme levels were (likely) showing my overuse of alcohol.

I'm hoping that my re-test next month is back to normal -- but in the meantime (like you have been doing), I've been Googling this, that, and everything else ... and have gone from scaring myself into an early grave to convincing myself that I'm OK, and back and forth. Maybe being scared is a good thing .. but I can't wait to get a clean bill of health .. hopefully next month .. *crossing fingers*

If you're worried, maybe a visit to your doctor will put your mind at ease (or scare you into abstinence, like it has for me). Btw, I'm 43 (almost 44).
AF for two years. Slight relapse. Working on it at the moment.

P.s... Welcome and nice to meet you!

Btw, if you Google the words liver and coffee, there are lots of studies that show coffee to help with liver function.

Drinking squeezed lemon juice in a cup of warm (not cold) water is known to help too.

And, as others have mentioned, milk thistle (I believe liquid is better than pill form, but not sure).

And there's something called Liv-52, but I haven't been able to find it anywhere locally (I'm in NS, Canada).

                              Good luck with everything!
