      I Have A Confession

C&W music is not at the top of my play-lists unfortunately Rubes. Now Psi Trance, Tribal Techno, Dub reggae, World Fusion on the other hand......lol!!!

I WAS though classically trained as a pianist and I've had a love and appreciation for music from a very, very early age. I can listen to ANY type of music really depending on mood etc. Here's one of my old fav. country tunes

Alcohol/Addiction tune. This one kept me going in my first few months of getting sober back in June 2007 after drinking solidly for nearly 15 years

Thanks Hippie. Country music has it's roots in what could be played in the wilderness, by instruments to remind them of the country they immigrated from. I particularly love the dulcimer and mondolin. A fav of mind, especially since his momma's my good friend, is Alan Jackson, and his song 'Gone Country' sings about all the singers flocking to country music because it is so stable, and so lucrative. Kid Rock, Darius Rucker (from Hootie and the Blow Fish), Jessica Simpson - all have had recent hits and made out like bandits. Many songs are 'tongue in cheek'. Hips, have you ever seen Jerry Lee Lewis play? Or Ronnie Milsap? Bluegrass became an 'overnight'sensation with 'O Brother Where Art Tho', with George Clooney. Alison Kraus is ethereal in 'Cold Mountain', with Nicole Kidman, Renee Zellweger, and that English guy. Anyway, the music comes from the heart and soul of the people, their survival, and has changed, not always for the good to suit modern taste. Elvis' 'Love me Tender', and Patsy Clines' 'Crazy' will always be among my favs. So glad you are all sharing.

I think you would of looked quite odd in helmet, pads etc playing the trombone at half time!! No time for a quick change hey!!!lol

I was fortunate to finish all of my 8 Grades (8 practical & 2 Theory exams) with the Royal Schools & Colleges of music before I was 16. My last grade was bloody hard though as I was studying for school exams at the time as well. I was also smoking lots of weed at that time too. My school work did suffer and I didn't pass a lot of my exams at school. No regrets though! "No tears goodbye........"lol

I remember learning to play John Denver's 'Annie's Song' on the piano when I was about 9 years old. Still got the sheet music in my mum's loft. Sounds weird I know because it's a piece written on the acoustic guitar. Mind you so was 'The theme from the deer-hunter' by John Williams which I also played on piano!!.

Don't know whether I'd class JD as Country and Western though. I think he's more country/folk.

I saw John Denver in concert. (How old am I!!!!) He was a beautiful man, with a beautiful voice, and his singing was reedy, high, and beautiful. He sang about what he knew (unfortunately some drugs involved) and was an admitted alcoholic, but when he died in the experimental plane crash he was piloting, his autopsy showed no AL, no drugs. He was a REAL person, singing about the beauty of nature and life.

                        I Have A Confession

i love some country...where i live it's practically mandatory...i like willie nelson, patsy cline, loretta lynn and some newer "alt" country. loretta lynn's album "van lear rose" with jack white is AWESOME...

                        (Duet With Jack White)

Well Portland Oregon and sloe gin fizz
If that ain't love then tell me what is
Well I lost my heart it didn't take no time
But that ain't all. I lost my mind in Oregon

In a booth in the corner with the lights down low
I was movin' in fast she was takin' it slow
Well I looked at him and caught him lookin' at me
I knew right then we were playin' free in Oregon

Next day we knew last night got drunk
But we loved enough for the both of us
In the morning when the night had sobered up
It was much too late for the both of us in Oregon

Well sloe gin fizz works might fast
When you drink it by the pitcher and not by the glass
                        Hey bartender before you close
Pour us one more drink and a pitcher to go

And a pitcher to go [repeat]

the song van lear rose makes me cry every time i hear it!
                        One of my fondest memories
Was sittin' on my daddy's knee
Listenin' to the stories that he told
He'd pull out that old photograph
Like a treasured memory from the past
                        And say child
This here's the Van Lear Rose

Oh how it would bring a smile
When he talked about her big blue eyes
And how her beauty ran down to her soul
She'd walk across the coal miner's yard
Them miner's would yell loud and hard
and they'd dream of who would hold
                        The Van Lear Rose

                        (Chours
She was the belle of Johnson County
                        Ohio river to Big Sandy
A beauty to behold like a diamond in the coal
All the miner's they would gather 'round
Talk about the man that came to town
                        Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose

Now the Van Lear Rose could've had her pick
And all the fellers figured rich
Until this poor boy caught her eye
His buddies would all laugh and say
Your dreamin' boy she'll never look your way
You'll never ever hold the Van Lear Rose

                        (Chours)

Then one night in mid July
Underneath that ol' blue Kentucky sky
Well, that poor boy won that beauty's heart
Then my daddy would look at my mommy and smile
As he brushed the hair back from my eyes and he'd say
                        Your mama
                        She's the Van Lear Rose

                        (Chours)

                        Right under their nose
Stole the heart of the Van Lear Rose
