    when i'm 64

Lilmea - I had presumed you were quite a bit younger than me (I'm 41), isn't the cyberworld great? I'm with the 'live for today' crowd.

I think Paul McCartney is older than 64. I remember reading an article about him a few years ago, in reference to that song.

That Girl, you are young to be thinking about 64!

Peace, what made you decide on '64'? Quite an odd number. LOL.

64 came from the beatles song afm.

Peace, I think that this idea is just one of those irrational thoughts that floats on through our minds, a hold-over from the attitude or viewpoint about alcohol as a good, and enjoyable, thing. It's like smoking, in some ways... there are people who are sick, who sometimes say: "why not smoke, if I am dying, anyway?" and I suppose that is a bit more reasonable, isn't it, because smoking doesn't radically wreck the overall quality of our emotional and interpersonal lives, like alcohol does (just our hearts and lungs).

There are all kinds of fantasies about alcohol that will survive for years, maybe forever, after we quit drinking... based on the idea that, at some point, we can (or should be able to) really enjoy drinking... maybe, when we are 64. Maybe, when we are old...

I'm not 64 (yet) but it's unreasonably close, and if you manage to get to that point healthy and happy, you begin to be afraid to do things that you know will harm your body. We finally begin to recognize our mortality.

I hope at 64, I vividly remember how horrific my life was when it included alcohol on a regular basis. I am coming up on a year AF and have had a thought in my head which I have yet to act upon. I have been considering asking my kids to write me a letter of how our relationship has changed since I quit drinking and why I should never drink again. I am sure that if I were to be tempted, and revisit the words on these pages, I would be jolted back to reality. My reservations in asking them so far, is that I am not sure that I could bear the heart ache of reading, what they have to say. I wish I could rewind...
