Monkeys?! Wow. That is really weird to me. But you must have an amazing growing season where you are.

Last year I was having my carrots stolen. I couldn't figure out why my patch looked a little smaller each day. Then one evening I looked out my window and saw my dog laying in the backyard chowing down on a carrot. Mystery solved. He would gently paw at one until he could grab it with his teeth and pull it out. I guess he thought of it as self-serve snacks. Labs have great noses.

We planted some flowers yesterday, just to get into the spirit. Normally we would have planted peas and potatoes by now, but it has been a cold winter.

      Mo.

I wonder if we could get a "Gardening" section here somewhere? Seems like there is a lot of us.

Wow, this thread has taken off! I welcome the responses of other gardeners who post here, but I will try to always give my 2 cents.

Here's a link to 4 short videos on roses, I think 2 are specific to pruning.
How to Prune Shrub Roses - Fine Gardening Video
Roses do well if they are cut back every year, they will produce more flowers. Prune when you see new growth, those little red buds on the sides of the branches. I recently read something about pruning when the forsythia is in bloom, but I think you can do it sooner than that.

Mags, I can't believe you know Lee Reich. I kind thought I had read most of what a home vegetable gardener needs to know, until I read her book. I enjoy her writings also in the NY Times Sunday gardening section. If you can learn how to improve your soil, you can grow a garden. I make compost, but I buy a number of (weedless) bags of it each year. You can get it free from farmers if you have a pick-up truck, but I don't.

EvieLou, can you do anything about air circulation? How about something like tuna can rings under your veggies, to keep them drier (if your problem is where they touch the soil)? Our summers are pretty dry, so fungus isn't a problem. Do you want to try posting on GardenWeb, or I can do that for you, sister. I promise that people there will have some ideas to try.

Deebs, I'm thinking a scent-based repellant could help with the monkeys. No promises, I have no experience with this. An organic product called Deer Off smells like rotten eggs, works pretty well with deer and rabbits and raccoons, and doesn't wash off in the first rain. It is best to rotate repellants, the hungry animals do become accustomed to the scent after a couple of months. Blood meal is another effective repellant, as well as strong scented soaps including Irish Spring.

OK, the sun is out, so I have to get out for awhile. I am so excited about this thread. I'll check back later.

                  EvieLou,
I have an idea to reduce fungus: I mentioned improving air circulation, and you can do this by growing veggies on a trellis. Here's a link to a support :

                  What do you think?

Hart, seems we gave you some ideas last summer. Did you try anything?

Thanks Sunny my Dear Sista...I think the air movement and the trellis will help with several different veggies...we shall give it a try.

                      Anyone,
If you don't have an established garden, this would be an easy idea to try:

I want a monkey!!!! HA HA It is all I am missing in my lil zoo.....

I got my ferns today and some tropical plants to put by the pool. I have to put them in the green house during the colder months here, but I love them sitting around on the decks.

Tomorrow I will plant some more lillies in my lily garden. Everything is starting to bud out.....I am getting excited.

                                More2Life,
Your new little garden sound perfect, but things don't usually turn out perfect with people (us!) or plants. I'm sure you plan to do a lot of watering in that heat, and you will reap some rewards.

Peacenick, I've never grown upside down tomatoes, but it is a current novelty. Gardeners' Supply is a good vendor, good customer service, though often pricey. This planter is bigger than some I've seen. I think you would get more tomatoes if you grew them in a garbage can, but you never know.
