Why I am personally scared to be AF (and why I need to be AF)

    1) Boredom - what do I do with the time that used to be my drinking time?
    2) Reinventing my life - Once work was over or it was a weekend - alcohol was like having my best friend, family member, etc. with me.
    3) Sticking out - family and work functions - I "was" the party guy...
    4) Miss the 'buzz' and the pain it killed

Now for the good stuff..why I will be AF

    1) I have so many more hours in the evening to enjoy life
    2) I'll quit doing the usual...fighting with wife, family, etc.
    3) Not being hungover!!!
    4) Being seen as a role model at work functions and with the family - "hey, if this guy can do it, so can I"
    5) Improved health in general
    6) Get rid of the next day depression from too much alcohol
    7) I could go on and on!
    8) I changed my life to be cigarette free 4 months ago and survived and feel great. This is the next step in self improvement.

Hope to hear your thoughts on what keeps you motivated, etc.

As the AF time passes the initial concerns listed above dissapate to some extent. They may not disappear altogether, but become more managable. The list of positives starts to get longer and longer and you start to feel physically great. Whatever your long term goal I wish to complete success. I think just keeping on checking in here has been my greatest overal support tool, especially the drink tracker and a few individuals who share my particular issues who have been extra supportive. Everyone here is amazing and will help you on your way.

Those were exactly my fears too Lasty.
I was terrified of sobering up and then realised I had no choice.
Once the choice was taken away from me I just decided to work at it.
i can honestly say I love my sober life, I am now finding the person who has been buried for all these years (about 30) and finding out what makes me tick, what I enjoy and what makes me proud to be me.
Before, I simply didnt like me...
Give yourself time to rediscover yourself, make notes of the subtle and not so subtle positve changes that will be happening daily.
Oh yeah, and about being the party guy, were you really? I thought I was too, but maybe I was just a joke....

That's what you have to do. We all do to some extent. The bottle had taken such a hold of me that I was lost without it. I found that long term alcohol abuse dulled my passion for enjoying life. I really believed that that was all there was to be concerned about.
Part of the problem for me is actually getting up and doing something else, not just thinking about it. Any interests I'd harboured over the years and not had the time or energy to explore. I'm starting back walking again now the weather's getting better (Long distance, blister inducing stuff) and I'm going up as many Monroes as I can this year. There's always something on in the evenings to keep me busy. I've found that instead of wondering what I'm going to do on a given night, a set routine helps. Then I know what I'll be doing.
My favourite part of every day though is diving into the cool sheets at night and relaxing with that feeling that today was a success, (in respect of my ability to control my own behaviour), I didn't hurt anybody and I'm getting that little bit better, more in control and with some self-respect and a little pride.

Fiind something you like to do....I picked up gardeing and have several animals. No time to stay drunk anymore!!! LITERALLY....my plants would die and so would my animals. AND both are very rewarding. Keep up the good work....
