looking for a little help :(

I've been here forever and cannot seem to make any progress. I don't suffer withdrawals when i try to quit, but damn, some part of me is in utter terror of quitting.
I desperately need/want some AF time.

My question is .. was thinking about whether I should try a med to just get me started. I am afraid of Topamax, from hearing about side effects, but started looking into Naltrexone. I know that no one here can give me medical advice, but I also take an antidepressant (Zoloft) and a very low dose of Clonezapam. from what I can tell, these aren't contraindicated drugs. (I worry about drug interactions, yet seem to be OK with destroying my body with alcohol ... hmmm)
Any advice would be appreciated .. thanks :thanks: Dex the Travolta Cat

Dexterhead, I remember you. We both started about the same time. I left for a while. Not really working on quiting for a while even though my hubby wanted me too.
I'm back, but it's too late, he left.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, that brought me to stop. I'm now in counseling and going to AA. In the past 4 wks have only drank 3 days, which is a miracle for me.

Not sure about the naltrexone, at one time I asked my doc for it, but she wasn't familiar with its use for AL, so wouldn't prescribe it. I too was on antidepressants and at one time used clonazapam as well. No longer on either.

Not sure if any of this will help you or not, but thanks for listening and keep on trying.

          HI Dex,

I too suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. I MUST TELL YOU alcohol made it MUCH WORSE. And I guess I used that for my excuse to drink. I needed one to RELAX etc. I have been on here for almost 2 years and have been AF for the past 7 months. So, don't think there is one miracle pill or something you can do to make it happen. Like most things it takes time and dedication. I now can go socially and not be tempted one tiny bit! I am in control of my life now and will never let that EVIL STUFF in a bottle rule ME.

Best of luck to you. I know it's a rough journey, but there are tons of support and success here.

            Hi Dex,

I can tell you there were times I needed to take a little break from this site to take my mind off al and just off trying so hard, ya know? Not that this site isn't the GREATEST, because it is! My therapist suggested Yoga and it has really been helpful, that and L-Glutamine.....either sublingual or in liquid form. Also, I noticed antidepressants caused me to drink more, I switched to SAMe and am doing MUCH better. HANG IN THERE BECAUSE YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!!!!

              Medications

Hi Dexter - lordy, just did a fabby, long reply and then "bing" .... "computer says no" ..

Anyway, long and short is that I'm on anti-depressants which I wouldn't give up at all. Needed something to curb my cravings. TOPA I found dulled me so didn't want that. 3 days into the NALTREXONE and it's going great. I'd recommend that but, hey, I'm not a "DOCTORGIRL" if you get my drift!

If you want any further info, feel free to PM me.

              Good Luck!

                Hi Dexterhead,
I personally did the Topa which worked really well for me. The side effects were minimal and the benifits huge. I didn't take it for long though, just long enough to get into a new habit of NOT drinking.
I have found that the suppliments have worked for me in the long term -- have you tried the Kudzu and L-Glut?
Something I have just started which works well for anxiety is L-Theanine, with 500mg of GABA and 300mg of Magnesium -- the health shop recommended I took all three together for the full benefits.

                Wishing you all the best.

Hey Dex good to see you . . .

I know nothing about meds. sorry. As always though there is excellent feedback from the good ppl. here.

Just want to let you know I am sending Prayers and Positive Energy, all I can suggest for your anxiety is to keep occupied with as many things as possible. Meditation CD's work for me, one inparticular is Louise Hay's 'I Can Do It'. It covers various aspects of ones life and you can listen to it anytime even while on the computer.

Travolta Cat, too right that's what kitty reminds me of lol, took me a minute to get it, but then I'm not always the sharpest tool in the shed.

Wishing you well each and every day of your journey (24/7).

Dex, Have you looked at Baclofen ??? It has very low side effects and can be taken with most other meds. There is a book called "End of my Addiction " written all about it and it really did the trick for me ASAP !!! PM me if you want a good site to order it from. I used Nal and it worked well for me too but I like Bac better...it/s cheaper and has less side effects and you can still drink with it but the desire to drink just isn't there anymore...so why FORCE it down your throat ???? WHAT A RELIEF !!!!!!!!
