The Next Day Thread, Mon 29th June

    Hi Everyone
Well the weather here is really bad we have a gail warning, so no going out today for me, well apart from when I drop the kids off at school!
Not much happening here today apart from me having a date with my ironing!!!!
I am going to give modding another go but I am going to have more control over myself this time, I think I was being to greedy last time and thought that I could just walk straight back into being "normal"
Well its time to put my furry boots on and brave the winds
Will try and check in later
I hope you all have a wonderful Monday

    Hi Ronnie!

It's so interesting to me to converse with someone from so far away! I am from such a different environment, the green wooded round mountains of Pennsylvania in the US. Is it cold there as well as windy? How are you doing? I drank all weekend and feel terrible about it. Now, I am starting over. Do you live very far from the ocean? Are there lots of sharks?

      Hi Road Warrior,
I'm on the opposite side of Australia on the east coast. About 3,000 miles from ronnie.
I wake up with the sun rising over the Pacific Ocean, and ronnie wathches the sun set over the Indian Ocean.
Yep it gets cold here in the southern half of Australia. Australia is the first land mass to get weather straight from Antarctica (due to the rotation of the earth). We get snow in some parts, and while I am skiing in July, someone else is surfing in Queensland. I live 600 metres from the Tasman Sea, and am looking at the view as I type!
Sharks. No more than in say California. Sharks kill about 3 people world wide per year. Bees kill about 450 people a year world wide. Sharks spit us out after they've tasted us as they don't like the texture, especially if you're wearing a wetsuit. It's just that the initial nibble does a lot of damage to humans. If a shark wanted to kill and eat us, they would. Sharks unfortunately have bad media. Or rather the media hypes up shark attacks out of all proportion. A chap got nibbled yestterday about 5 miles from my place. He got 50 stitches in his leg. He thinks it was a bronze whaler. Now if that shark wanted a feed, he wouldn't have been on TV last night talking about it!
Where I live used to be rainforest. It is now dairy farms.
Don't feel terrible about drinking all weekend. That will achieve nothing. Feel good that you are starting over.
Hope this answerd your questions. I sound like a geography teacher. Funny about that, I did Earth Science at Uni.

Morning all - just adding to Rags' geography lesson for Road Warrior - I'm about 11hrs driving, south of Rags, in Central Victoria. Once upon a time a gold mining area, now largely sheep grazing and wine country (go figure!). Lots of 'roos, echidnas, wallabies, tiger snakes and brown snakes and red back spiders. Presently it's cold, about 52F but everything is delightfully green, unlike during summer when all the grass etc dries off and pastures turn into dust bowls. Wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Rags - making your soup tonight.

        Hello to all to come.

          Hi Road & Rags
Wow rags you have taught me a few things this morning, perhaps I should call you Miss Rags :H

Road - I live about 5 min. walk away from the ocean but I cant see it from my house like rags can, I live down in a dip, the only view I have is a small bit of bush land at the front. We get more Whales here than sharks, Whales are lovely creatures, it amazes me how they can swim as they are so big, last year I went on a whale watching boat and WOW it was great to watch.
I am more scared of the snakes (not that I have seen that many) but I know that some of my neibours have had them in thier garages and once my hubby saw a snake in our back garden and it went through a little hole under our house, I could'nt sleep for about 2 days as I kept thinking that I could feel the snake in bed (and no rude comments please):H

Tawny, I also did the sage scone recipe as well so have a look. Hey, we are practically neighbours!
              Hey Ronnie and Road Warrier
, let's continue with the geography and nature lessons.
Road, I have a third of an acre surronded by 10 axres of disused grazing. A small rmnant of rainforest survives. I have identified 45 species of native birds that are either pemanent residents, frquent visitors, or seasonal visitors. Sadly I'm now getting lorikeets and rosellas. They should not be here, but drought, loss of environment and housing has pushed them here. I have an eastern swamp wallaby that visits from time to time, black snakes (extremely timid) and late last year a diamond python took up residence, and is probably hibernating in the roof of my guest accommodation out the back.
Saw a couple of whales last week heading north, and 10 days ago 5 whales were in our little town harbour! I didn't find out till 2 days later dammit.
Ronnie, all snakes except for browns and tigers are usually timid. None of them can eat us, we are giants. They attack as we don't give them an escape route. I used to be absolutel terrified of snakes. I now have a healthy respect for them. Another maligned creature.
Tawny, shall we tell Road Warrier about the drop bears?

Hmmm ... (thinks) Rags, best leave that until we know him a little better.

OK, continuing the theme - I have 14 acres of what used to be sheep grazing land, i.e. very flat and pretty denuded of any vegetation. I have spent countless hours and $$$'s regenerating the place with many native trees and shrubs which has resulted in an abundance of birdlife. Lack of water is my biggest obstacle - for many years now we have been in a severe drought situation; even the level of the underground aquifer has dropped below the depth of my bore. As I am too far out of a town, I cannot access municipal water, so the only water available to me comes from rain which we collect from our roofs and store in tanks. Not much help when there is no significant rain.

I also do not have a garbage collection service. This is excellent. When you are responsible for taking your own trash to the dump, you become very mindful of recycling, composting and generally buying stuff which generates the least amount of trash. Plastic is the bane of my life .

My nearest neighbours live one mile away. A satellite dish provides my internet. I'm a happy camper. Phew. That's enough for now.

                      Morning all

Hi Ronnie, Rags, Tawny, Roadwarrier & Zen,

RW to let you know I live in a beachside suburb about 90min drive north of Sydney.

Today the sun is out and a balmy 19c here today with is around 66f. Not too bad really.

I dont have a water view but it takes about 1 minutes to drive and about 15 minutes to walk (we have alots of hills).

I love where I live, I live high in my street and don't need coverings on the windows for privacy.

I watch a bush turkey looking to set up his nest every morning in my garden at the moment.

It is amazing how high those big clumsy birds can fly!

Zen, you are welcome to stay at my place anytime.

Rags, the whales are making their way up my way now.

Last year we had a mum & bubby in our little harbour. So beautiful!

Things are really stressful here but I am not drinking and I will survive.

                      Take Care

Just keep on swmming, just keep on swimming!
