wine my only reliable friend is always available.
:new: Wine, my only reliable friend is always available. It makes a lonely evening OK! but when the effects wear off, I am left with me and I don't like myself too much! Never have done though! Instead of drinking though, I will feel depressed and lonely! Next day I feel more depressed because of the wine. It bites me on the arse! Gotto go though, health is not good, and spiritually I am in bad shape. The world looks bleak! Catch 22!Tags: None

Hi .. nice to meet you. Welcome to the site. There are so many great message boards to read through ... you'll find a lot of support and people dealing with similar AL problems here. Lots to read, lots to learn, lots to try to find what works for you.
Yep .. AL(cohol) is a rotten, manipulative buddy. He uses you and makes you feel like you need him to be happy or content or less lonely, or whatever works in your particular situation. It gets so that you can't imagine life being any good if he weren't in it. He's a sneak, that one.
The neat thing about giving AL up (after the initial not-so-fun period in the first week or however long you need) is that things are actually way cooler without him. The feelings of complete freedom and control are amazing. The feeling of being healthy and energetic. The feeling of "normality". It opens so many new doors for you. Don't be afraid to try it ... I mean, it seems like it would be lonely without AL, but it turns out to be the total opposite. (I'm only sober a month, so, as you can probably tell, I'm still on a sober "high" .. it's all new to me!)
You've found a great site. Visit often, read a lot, and post as much as you can or want to. Warning: it's addictive! But in a good way.AF for two years. Slight relapse. Working on it at the moment.

Hi and welcome, Tipsy. I agree with Cat -- with "friends" like that, who needs enemies? I once had a boyfriend who treated me SO well in the evening when he wanted *something* and then treated me like dirt the next day. 'Dropped him like a hot potato! Good riddance. Anyway, please do stick around, explore all the threads (Tools is very helpful and the Newbies Nest is a great place to feel secure and make some new friends.) I think you'll find a lot of Inspiration and Compassion here at MWO. And if you stay close you will find out you really do have a reason to 'Like You' for none of us are perfect.
My train of thought(s) have changed dramatically for the better since I found this forum and it's open, honest and wonderful ppl. :l

I too thought wine was my best friend, but it's all a lie! Your best friend wouldn't put on the pounds with all it's empty calories, raise your blood pressure, give you headaches and nausea, grogginess, relationship problems, cost you a fortune.........
I could go on, but you get the picture.
As 42 CAT said, life is better without a friend like that.

Tips, First welcome, welcome, welcome.
This is a great place to be. You will get to meet so many people that feel the same way you do. Our problem is that we never really felt like everyone else until we started drinking. Most of us learned that at an early age.
The reason AL is your only "reliable" friend is because just like an abusive boyfriend...he has alienated you from all people who care about you. Thats the manipulation of the drug. isolate so that he can take full control.
Its true once you get through the fist 4-5 days the physical withdrawl is gone but you still have the mental obsession. As long as you think that AL is your friend, you wont be able to find others in you r life. I was at an AA meeting the other day and the speaker said..."Alocholism is the only disease tthat takes your dignity as it kills you. by the time you die from the disease you have lost everything and people either despise you or feel sorry for you"...some friend.
We are here for you. Good luck and keep in touch.

Hello tipsytoes...
I was in pretty much the same boat as you. Wine was my best friend for a heck of a long time. That was primarily due to the grip that it had on me, I had declined so many invitations from REAL friends that I had effectively drunk myself into isolation.
Now that I am on the straight and narrow (well 18 days AF at least but my intention is for ever) I am making use of every single opportunity to get back out there and into the social world.
It is indeed a big, bright, wonderful, real world out there and AL robs us our birth rite of access to that real world.
Strength to you, we are all here for you!
