She is Chloe. The artist painted her in about 1876. She was in love with the painter who was her sister's lover. Chloe committed suicide 3 months after the portrait by drinking ground up match heads.
Since that day she has been a sacred symbol of Australian womanhood. The Aussie soldiers who went to the Boer war toasted her, as did the Aussies and Brits in WW1. In WW2 the tradition continued with the Aussies and Yanks, and so in Korea and Vietnam and the Gulf wars. When I went to East Timor I did as my forefathers did. That is what U see
