BTW, when my children were small I made all our clothes, then made custom gowns for my daughter when she was in pageants, balls, proms, etc. She's said she certainly didn't appreciate it at the time. One of the dresses I made she wore for an antebellum home tour, complete with lace-trimmed pantaloons and silk flowers for the side ringlets in her hair. It ended up in a magazine, and photographed by hundreds over two days. It was gorgeous iridescent white, off the shoulder with a band of silk handmade roses around the bodice top, and a lace overlaid top hand-sewn with pearls and sequins. Truly one of a kind.

Believe it or not, my daughter had so many gowns, including the ones I made, that as my granddaughters grew up I just let them play with them (in the house here) and we have SO many treasured pics of them having fashion shows over the years. I'll always make them what they ask for, and I think they now appreciate the time, and maybe some skills, it takes to make them. Lots of love goes into those gowns.sigpic

Lucky, I live in California, too, so I can commiserate. This is also why we're in deep doo doo:

State pays $335k over senator's erratic driving, accident BY CHRIS RIZO
Carole Migden (D) SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)-Cash-strapped California will pay $335,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a woman after then-state Sen. Carole Migden rear-ended her, the attorney general's office said.
The San Francisco Democrat rear-ended the woman, capping a 30-mile erratic drive in Solano County in which several motorists called 911 after seeing Midgen weaving in and out of traffic on Interstate 80 and Highway 12 on May 18, 2007, driving at about 80-miles an hour in her state-issued Toyota Highlander.
The wild ride ended when Migden rear-ended a 2005 Honda sedan driven by Ellen Butawan, who was slowing for a red light in Fairfield, Calif. Butawan, who suffered minor injuries, sued the state and Migden in Solano County Superior Court. The state has agreed to pay $335,000 to settle the lawsuit.
Attorney General Jerry Brown's office defended the lawsuit because the crash happened while Migden was acting within the scope of her state employment, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Tuesday.
The state has already paid more than $25,000 for property damage related to the incident.
The California Highway Patrol, in their investigation, listed Migden's cell phone use as a contributing factor to the crash. Her license was suspended for several months. She pleaded no contest to reckless driving, a misdemeanor, and was fined $710.
After Migden lost her Senate seat, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger gave her a $132,000-a-year job on the Integrated Waste Management Board, which meets just once a month.

Geez! OK, that's the downside of living here in this wacky state. The up sides are many: the beaches (including Bodega Bay which I just visited and found hauntingly beautiful), camping under the redwoods, first-rate museums and entertainment... I could go on. This Sunday, I'm in the Cardboard Tube Fighting League Tournament, in which, costumed participants wield large cardboard tubes in a fight for domination. I've visited 37 of the 52 states, plus the US Virgin Islands. Budget woes aside, California's my fav."If you fell down yesterday, get up today." -- H.G. Wells
