Posted to a friend, thought I'd share...

Was chatting to a friend this morning who said that prior to becoming a Christian, they used to drink a bottle of vodka a day. It was great to share experiences and be encouraged - I then posted the following to them as an email. (I've eliminated some names and things)

It was good chatting this morning. I remember a few years ago when 'P' was preaching on the ten commandments. The kids from 'CS' had made paper 'stone tablets' of each of the commandments with clippings of pictures from magazines and they'd been stuck on the church walls. One Sunday morning, feeling a bit rough from the night before, I trundled upstairs and sat down and right in front of me was the commandment, 'You shall have no other gods before me' and slap bang in the middle of the tablet was a picture of a bottle of liquor. I felt quite awkward, I think I wanted to cry but generally I was still in denial.

I remember during another service crying begging for God to just take the problem away and I heard Him say to me, 'I cannot just take this away, this is a decision you need to make - but I will walk with you every step of the way.'

At the time my relationship with God had dwindled because of my drinking but His relationship with me has always remained constant.

Vlad! So good to hear from you. Your post is too powerful for words. For those of us who ARE Christians, or spiritual, or whatever we call our own beliefs, that is a picture that should be impressed on us. 'No other gods before Him'. It could be no other gods before our health, our life, our loved ones, our living the life we could and should be living. Thank you so much for sharing.

        Yeah, oops - I knew what I thought I'd posted. Just re-read it - bit of a mis-type there. I've corrected it now. :H

Vlad, I think that is why AA speaks so much to a higher power, or a god as we understand him. Makes perfect sense to me. We need his/her guidance to lead us on right paths. For me that is AL free and I'm listening to my higher power and taking it all right in at the moment and hopefully for the rest of my life.

            Thanks for sharing

This is a powerful song that speaks to my heart. For those of you who KNOW that it is your Higher Power (to me, Jesus) who can save you from this life, you truly know this need of resurrection. Hope this song will minister to you as it does to me. Vlad,
I'm here with you. I used to say, "Why isn't he helping me?" But we need to find our own way out, with HIS help.

There is a forum on this site called "What We Believe".
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life... And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

I am so glad for you guys,
You seem to do it with such ease. Unfortunately I am an atheist and need to rely on a form of self help. I went to a salvation army rehab for 8 months after I got out of the army and couldn't simply believe in something for the sake of convenience. I found a way.

LG - I want to reply but I'm not quite sure what to say. As I did mention though, God said He couldn't just give me a 'convenient' quick fix and my alcohol problem would go away. I had to work at it - I had my own 'self help' - if you like, to do. I've abstained for long periods of time, joined this forum, read the My Way Out book - all these things have helped and have their place. But it's about more than God just helping us through the bad times - it's about knowing true forgiveness. We've all done things we've regretted, drunk or not drunk - living with the burden of guilt is sometimes unbearable - no self help can rid us of that. Knowing forgiveness in Jesus relieves that burden. Just to share something my friend said in response:

God is so amazing that no matter how many times we mess up, He is always there, just waiting for us to turn back to Him and He will never forsake us or forget us. He's doing a work in us, we just need to remember that there is nothing too hard to go through as long as He is with us.

He says that they are things that we have to work through but He is with us all the way, despite ourselves and our failings.
Listen for God's voice in everything you do, everywhere you go; He's the one who will keep you on track. Proverbs 3:6 The Message

Now technically, that's not quite correct - I'm quarter Welsh, a Pom being an Englishman/woman right? :H
