The Gardening Thread v.2 - Fall Edition!

Hi all! Boy - another cool spell here in northern IL. At this rate, we will have our first frost by Labor Day LOL!

Yesterday I cried some more tears over the bunny who continues to destroy my beans. It's war - I took one of my dogs out into the garden with me as a deterent. (it's fenced in to keep the dogs out but obviously needs fortification at the bottom!) I groomed the dog near the beans and let her run around with me until she started pulling peppers off the plants and then grabbed a tomato out of the pile I had picked and nearly dug up my honeydew plant trying to bury it!

Anyway...I'd sure love some hot weather.

In terms of storage for winter so far....

6 pints bread and butter pickles
    9 pints dill pickes
1+ pint dehydrated beans (yellow and green)
Beets slices and pepper pieces (green & red bell) in dehydrator now
    2 pints dehydrated zuke slices
    6 small bags frozen beans
    5 small bags frozen broccoli

The red pepper is from the farmers market - I also have a yellow and orange one I'm going to dehydrate. I should get a few more of those. We also got some dehydrated morel mushrooms from a friend - those will be nice for winter. There is a mushroom farm nearby and I should dehydrate some more locally grown ones for winter.

Today I'm going to do some pint jars of tomatoes. I will do quarts too when there are more ripe ones - if there are more ripe ones!

I've now pulled all of my yellow onions and starting to pull out the red ones. I plan to dehydrate a lot of those.

I'm loving this dehydrator! I also like this Pump-n-seal gizmo. It works with canning lids/rings too - not just used jelly/pickle jar type lids. Pump and Seal food saver vacuum sealer is better than Tilia FoodSaver

Still debating on fall planting. I guess I need to Just Do It. Mother Nature will do whatever she does. I sure would like to get bunny moved out first though. Yesterday I cleaned all the old stuff out of the garden (lettuce gone to seed, base plants for cauliflower already harvested, etc.) Baby steps.

I'm enjoying reading about what everyone is doing! The blueberry talk is making me hungry.

DG, seeds are cheap so just try it and see what happens - that is certainly one approach. Some gardeners are looking for experiments, and others are looking for guaranteed results. The reality is somewhere in the middle.

You are right Sunbeam - the best stuff I have learned so far is just by doing! I just finished canning tomatoes today and don't really feel like gardening. I think I'm going to take the rest of the day off and see what tomorrow brings. LOL - better not do that for too many days or I KNOW what I will have come fall! (nothing)

DG, can you re-hydrate the mushrooms to make cream of mushroom soup? I never thought of dehydrating the peppers. Will have to try that. I love my foodsaver gizmo things...LOL!!
          Hi Sunbeam!

Should be able to re-hydrate just about anything. I use a lot of mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc. in soups and crock pop "surprises" in the winter so it will be good to have this stuff on hand. The green peppers (bell) stunk up the house pretty good last night. :H Wonder what the hot peppers will do today? (I hope they don't have us in tears before it's over - we will find out soon enough!)

I am currently putting together my order for fall bulbs to plant. I always order hyacinths to force indoors, more daffodils.

What does one use to tackle the confederate jasmine residue from pruning shears?

                    Hi Greenie!
I can't grow Jasmine, but have you tried GooGone? It works very well to remove gum from tags stuck to our purchases, and I'm just thinking that the residue is gummy or you might not be asking.

Oh yeah... I think I have some. The jasmine goo doesn't even wash out of your clothes. You know we could use it to glue together those indestructable gumballs (from the trees) and use it instead of asphalt on the roads. :H

                              Hi Tawny,
I used to grow these. They were pretty long-blooming if you kept them deadheaded, cutting back to the next branch. Do you mean cutting back to reduce size, or general maintenance pruning? It used to be that the advice was to cut them back in the fall, but that thinking has changed based on tests at Cornell. Here's a fall prep video. I believe the Austin roses are grafted, so they would need the winter mulch demonstrated here: Videos - Fine Gardening

I think I just found the info you need, from the Austin Roses web site: Summer pruning English shrub roses
The nature of David Austin's English Roses is to repeat flower continuously through the season, with each flowering creating an even taller shrub. In warmer climates, they tend to grow more vigorously and can become too tall.
To prevent this, make sure you summer prune after each flush of flowering as opposed to simply deadheading. The aim is to improve repeat flowering and to maintain the overall shape of the plant.
After each flush of flowers has finished, cut back the flowering stems to two or three sets of leaves. You may also notice that the occasional new long, strong stem will appear from the base of the shrub, or sometimes grows higher up from older branches. These can grow quickly above the frame of the plant and look a little out of place at first. These stems are in fact very beneficial, forming strong, healthy new stems which will flower next season. We recommend that you trim these new stems back slightly when carrying out summer pruning, just enough to maintain the nicely rounded shape of the shrub.

I know I clown around a lot , but this really happened to me ! I have my little garden : Tomatoes, squash, cucumbers, green peppers ...even water melons. Well, I planted my cucumbers too close to my squash.....I noticed the other day a couple of veg. were hanging on my cucumber vine. They looked kind of weird....They were a light green and had a shape that resembled yellow squash...they were on my cucumber vine ! I harvested the Veg. and tasted it.....it tasted like cucumber with a bitter taste and had the insides of a squash. I'm keeping the seeds......planting them next year ! ha!
