Personally, I'd stick with Angel Fish because they are easy to keep. Maybe get something from the Characidae family like Neon Tetras, Cardinal Tetras, Black Neons, any small tetra (but not Piranhas!!!).

Get a bottom feeding fish too such as a clown loach or flying fox - they seem to be pretty hardy fish.

Yeah, they do have a habit of killing one another suddenly for no reason. Suggestion is to have 1 male and 2 females.

Funny story - I bought 3 Angel Fish and named them Gorbechev, Yeltsin and Putin. Gorbechev and Yeltsin bullied Putin and killed him. Then Yeltsin got eaten by the lobster. For the last 3 years Gorbechev has been on his own (he is about 6 years old now). I decided to get him some friends, well it's been so long he just chased them around. Eventually he gave up and decided he would try and give up on life. I thought he would die very shortly (within a month), but 3 months down the line he is still alive, he mainly stays out of sight but as soon as I have visitors he swims to the front of the tank and promptly lies on his side like he's trying to get sympathy.

Sounds horrible, but sometimes I think, 'Just die already will you?!!!' We think maybe he swam too hard into the side of the tank (angel fish are easily startled and do that) and gave himself brain damage. But it's like he does it on purpose - all of a sudden he gets up and swims away.
