After checking things over and ensuring it comes from a positive perspective, then I believe it is the intention that counts, if something comes from good intentions and it is poorly received then what more could have been done?
As has been highlighted in what Cinders said, about the long term member leaving, communication is a two way thing and the receiver also has a responsibility in how they perceive what is given with good intent.
Sometimes we are an unwitting catalyst to something others need to learn, and as long as our intention was good and we are willing to learn too then all is well, in my humble opinion!
