How many times CAN one start again?!

i have heard that people who keep trying to stop drinking or smoking are the ones who eventually succeed. most folks don't just try to stop and magically do it, it is trial and effort. you are back now and that is what matters. now to keep up with yourself and make sure you know what triggers you, what you want to do instead of drinking.
myself, i know that i need to be vigilant and never believe that i can drink a little bit, as that has always been my downfall in the past.

    good luck to you...

    peace!

How many times CAN one start again?!

        Hi Deilight,
I have been on and off the wagon so many times I'm thinking of getting my own horse.
Seriously, an alcohol counseller told me a while ago told me 'don't give up on giving up'. truer words have never been spoken. I'm now on my umpteenth attempt. Now 7 weeks sober and counting. Whether it's this site or my will power only time will tell.

        Take care and good luck.

          Oh Wavey,
It is so true that anxiety/depression that led me to alcohol. I've found out I was self medicating. Fine at 1st but it's led to me being dependent on AL.
Add to the pot low self esteem and I'm now a full fledged alcoholic.

But I'm now a recovering alcoholic. No depression, slight anxiety but I don't know what to do about the low self esteem.

          Take care.

I've tried to quit many times. I still really don't know the difference between wanting to want to quit and actually wanting to quit. Anyway, I'm currently 2 weeks AF. The way I look at it, I have never failed in an attempt to quit as each time was merely practice for when I actually quit.

Peacenik is SO right! It's a process, and there IS no limit on it. I'm posting a poem here. It's old, maybe a little hokey, and probably familiar, but it makes a good point.

Don't Quit - by John Greenleaf Whittier
When things go wrong as they sometimes will,
When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,
When the funds are low and the debts are high
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,
When care is pressing you down a bit,
Rest, if you must, but don't quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As everyong of us sometimes learns,
And many a failure turns about
When he might have won had he stuck it out,
Dont' give up though the pace seems slow,
You may succeed with another blow.
Success is falure turned inside out,
The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,
And you never can tell how close you are,
It may be near when it seems so far,
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit
It's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
For all the sad words of tongue or pen,
The saddest are these: "It might have been!"

                ==
My grandmother was the wife of an alcoholic who beat her, and left her to raise seven children on her own in a two-room house in poor, rural Florida. Through countless trials, she successfully brought up all seven kids, including four college graduates, one author, two ministers, one business owner, and one outstanding mother -- all phenomenal individuals who had a real impact in the world. They found a weathered copy of this poem in her little wallet when she died. I'd say it works. Press on!

Great thread! Nice to know people ask the same questions i ask myself. I have been away from MWO for about a year but lately I've made some really positive changes - finally for ME for a change - and if I am going to make the best of these changes I need to face up to this nemesis of mine and beat it. I don't know how may times I've started again but I really want this to be the last time!
                        LOVE that poem LilBit!

JackieClaire, you said you had been self-medicating for the depression, but now you are AF and not depressed. How did you get over the depression?

My most recent bout of severe depression hit a few weeks ago, after which my semi-moderating totally fell apart, so here I am Day 3 once again. I've tried a number of anti-depressants over the last few months, but I guess the doctor just hasn't hit on quite the right one yet. Any thoughts, please?

Thank you for the articles, Sheri. I've had problems with depression long before I ever started drinking, but yes, it only makes sense that alcohol is going to skew the brain chemistry that much more and intensify episodes of anxiety and depression.

                              Hi Maisie,
I've suffered depression on and off all my life.

I've tried all sorts of anti-depressants. The one that worked for me was Mirtazapine, I think it's called Zispin as well.

But since throwing away the alcohol I haven't felt the need. (fingers crossed)

                              Love Jackie

                                Still struggling

                                Hi Everyone

It was so cool to get so many responses! Pity I only logged on today again.

Got through the entire weekend all the way up until Sunday afternoon. We drank, we had fun and didn't fight like we usually do and I haven't really had an AL day since then. An old friend is in town and we got over excited with that too, I guess. I haven't completely given up on the idea but will need to start again, again, again.

I'll keep going. The click is coming soon, I can feel it!

Hope you are all doing well.
