we've had 2 labs and they're not known for biting. good with kids etc.

I'm no expert, but come from a long line of dog owners.

Our last lab had very bad arthritis in his last few years. the vet gave him some medication and he coped fine.

Sounds like you've hit a nerve or sore joint.
