Afrikaans is a very interesting language - it has its roots from all the people, indigenous and those who settled here (or were brought as slaves) that make up the country today.

The closest Eurpean language to Afrikaans is actually Flemish, if I'm not mistaken

You are quite right GG.....Afrikaans is directly derived from Dutch...in fact Afrikaners are referred to (in a slightly derogatory manners) as Dutchmen in SA!
