    Where were you?

One of my favorite singers wrote 'Where Were You (When The World Stopped Turning)' as his response to the events 8 years ago today. I 've seen his first draft, a handwritten ode on three notebook pages he got up and wrote in the night, and it amazed me. I was working at the post office on 9/11/01, and a clerk came by and said "a plane has crashed into the Twin Towers in New York". Some people joked about it. A few minutes later, the clerk came back with the news of the Pentagon. There were no more jokes. My cousin lived just blocks from the Towers. A livelong friend worked in the Pentagon, in the area where the plane hit, but was on vacation that day. Each year on this day I remember the lives lost that day - innocent workers and passengers, heroic firefighters and police, and pray we never forget to be vigilant, and protect ourselves and our country from harm.

    Where were you?

    Thanks for the post Ruby.
I remember the day very well. I was working from home that morning so I had the TV on with the Today Show. I saw it unfold on TV. As my husband and drove to work a little bit later, we heard about the towers collapsing. Our offices in Dallas were shout down about an hour after we got there. We drove home and collected the kids from school. We spent the day calling family and friends. When we went to work the next day, it was eerie. Our offices were near Love Field and no planes were flying. It was deadly quiet for days. My office was working with others on the east coast to help with emergency cell site repairs for HLS. It was very surreal. Today, we live near DFW Airport. Every plane we hear - and there are many - is a sound of FREEDOM. God bless America!

      Where were you?

I was up having breaky before an early morning shift when the news came of the first plane hitting the tower. Was sitting watching as the second one hit 'live',was gobsmacked and not sure it was for real...rang my Mum to ask! Went to work and spent most of the day trying to catch news updates! Was deeply shocked and in disbelief. I'm in Oz!

          Where were you?

I use to live just blocks from the Pentagon, when my father was still in the Army (Fort Meyer, VA......Tensca Terrace...9th floor) I could look over and see Arlington National Cem., The Navy Annex and in the distance The Pentagon. We will not forget........and our prayers are with the victims families. IAD

            Where were you?

I remember quite well, too. I was on my way to work (still working as a corporate travel consultant at the time), about 5 minutes from my office. My first thought was... oh shit, do I have anyone on that flight? I remember thinking what a terrible accident. By the time I got out of the car, the second plane had hit the towers - no thoughts of accident anymore...

Daughter's FIL was a United Airlines captain at that time, and that had been one of his routes. He knew several of the crew members who went down. Still, its a day to remember the heroes.

                Where were you?

I was at home and received a phone call from a friend to turn on the TV. I had been drinking the night before and was in a hungover fog and remember not believing it was true.

My heart and prayers go out to the family members of the victims.

I know I've duplicated this link, but it's worth it if we REALLY listen to it. Regardless of the country music jokes, the put-downs, etc., we country people have bards who sing to us, and this is one of the best for today.

I just had a call from our friend who worked at the Pentagon. Such a bittersweet memory.

                            Where were you?

I can remeber that day like it was yesterday. I live just outside of DC and was driving downtown when 9/11 happened. I returned to my office which is a about 20 miles from the Pentagon. We spent most of the day in conference room watching the events unfold on TV. There were two people (I never met them) that lived in my neighborhood that were killed in the plane that went into the Pentagon. There is an elementary school just down the road named in their honor. NEWTON LEE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. We should honor them, everyone else that lost their life on that day, and all the great American soldiers that have and continue to preserve our rights to freedom on this day.

                              Where were you?

I was at my uni careers office, applying for my current job and waiting to get advice on my CV. They were running late so I waited in the office watching the TV screens in disbelief. A friend had just finished his postgraduate degree in London and returned to his job at the NYPD. I rushed home to phone him, only to get the voicemail for days. I was frantic. He'd gone into work late that morning and had seen the whole thing unfold while stuck in traffic on the Brooklyn Bridge. Afterwards he'd worked double, triple whatever shifts for days. He did return to visit London, but he was never the same.
