OK, I'm jumping the gun a bit, but I love decorating for Halloween, and with the weather and leaves changing it feels like times for pumpkins and goblins! So many of us have small children, grandchildren, and we also need things to keep our hands and head busy and not thinking of AL. I used to go all out with decorating, but for years AL robbed me of that interest, so I thought maybe some of you would like to share some children's crafts. Please add your favorites for everyone, and share some of your ideas, recipes, stories, etc. Let's get spooked! LOL :anon: :undercover: :dancingskel: :alf: :creepydude:

Spider Hatchlings






This is one egg that trick-or-treaters will scramble to get away from: an orb of hatching spiders hanging from an entryway ceiling or a door frame. CRAFT MATERIALS:
White glue (we used a 7 5/8-ounce bottle)
2 bowls
Plastic spoon
Balloon (we used an 11-inch size)
Cheesecloth cut into 12 or so 3- by 18-inch strips
Pin
Clear fishing line
Plastic spiders (available at orientaltrading.com)

Time needed: About 2 to 3 Hours
1. Empty the glue bottle into a bowl. Then fill the bottle halfway with water, shake it to dilute any remaining glue, and add the contents to the bowl. Stir the mixture well.

2. Inflate the balloon to about 9 inches tall and set it aside in another bowl.

3. Individually dip the cheesecloth strips into the glue, gently squeeze out the excess fluid, and spread the strips flat on the balloon. Cover the balloon this way, leaving 3 or 4 small gaps (as shown) and a 1 1/2-inch opening around the knot for tying on the spiders later. Let the glue dry, rotating the balloon occasionally to speed the drying process.

4. Pop the balloon with a pin and remove it.

5. Tie a loop for hanging the egg at one end of a long piece of fishing line. Near the top of the egg, insert the other end of the line through the cheesecloth, then reach inside and pull it out through a nearby gap and tie a spider to it. Gently pull the line back until the spider comes to rest against the inside of the egg, thereby securing the line.

6. Use more fishing line to create strings of spiders. To tie them to the egg, thread one end of the line through the cheesecloth and out a gap, knot the line, and pull the knot back inside the egg. Attach more spiders directly to the egg simply by poking 2 or 3 legs through the cheesecloth.

And the flip side...........

Well, with no kids much less grandkids... and the kids that come to the door mostly are bigger than me and sans costume, I use the time to go to the bedroom and shut the door and read. It was fun years before when the little costumed ones came and their parents stood at the edge of the yard. But now they go to church events and things that are "safer". I do like to carve a pumpkin though. Or maybe I'll go to a movie.

A lot of places have 'Trick or Trunk' now, people bring their cars to churches, parks, community centers, etc., and decorate the 'trunk' of their automobiles and give out candy from them. It's a nice way to be safe and be sure that your kids are welcome. Prizes are given for the best decorated trunk.

We still have the traditional 'trick or treaters' all done up with their costumes. I love it and already have my Halloween candy bought, I just need to put it in bags and attach our names to it. This year, the babe is going as a Medevial princess.

Swamp Water Punch with Dead Floating Hand.

Orange juice
Optional: ginger ale,
Cider
Blue food coloring

Put some blue food coloring into the orange juice punch until it turns a disgusting swamp-green color. The color is gross and the orange juice pulp floating around really adds to the effect. People will realize that the punch tastes good, but it will take them awhile to figure out it is orange juice.

Floating Arm-of-Death

Water or orange juice
gummy worms

Freeze the water and gummy worms in a clean rubber glove. Peel off the rubber glove and float the arm in the punch.

All the neighborhood kids gather at a neighbor's and expect me to bring 'Witches Brew', just a green punch, sometimes with things floating in it, and a piece of dry ice that makes the 'brew' smoke and bubble. They LOVE it!

I love the spider egg, Ruby!

An easy one I always did with the kids... have them rake leaves in the yard... stuff the leaves in black garbage bags.... one HUGE one, really full... the other ones a bit smaller and only about half full.. fold the half full ones over to make long, skinny bags and tie them together in twos. Then attach them to the big huge one in the middle... voila! A humongous spider to sit on top of a car port, lawn, etc...

Hello all, just thought I would pop in and wish you all a fabulous day.

I also make zombie toes and eyes; use a standard cheese wafer recipe, mix in some green food coloring. For the eyes, roll them in to eye-sized balls and press a slice of stuffed olive on the side for the pupil. If you really want to get creative, use some thinned red decorator gel and a tiny paint brush and paint on lines to make them bloodshot, then bake.
For the toes, roll them into toe-shaped 'logs', use a butter knife to make creases for knuckles, and press a sliced almond on the end for the toenails, then bake as directed.
For 'witches hand' goodie bags, fill clear gloves with popcorn and Halloween candies and tie off. Slip a plastic Halloween ring on one finger, and attach plastic nails to the ends of the fingers, if desired.
