                  Halloween

I am embarrassed after looking at the huge amount of trouble peeps in the USA go to for halloween. But here is my very cheap addition! Roll a sheet of toilet paper into a ball. put a tissue over it. tie under the ball with white thread. draw eyes, nose and mouth on head. tape a length of white thread to the top, hang from wherever. It makes a fairly good....if small...ghost. Make lots of small ghosts!!!

                    Creative Caramel Apples

                    INGREDIENTS
                    Apples*
1 bag (14 ounces) caramel candy, melted
2 tablespoons milk, water or cream
                    Butter, for baking sheet
Toppings, such as chocolate chips, sprinkles, nuts, chopped or crushed candy, granola, dried fruit
                    Wood skewers or popsicle sticks

*The key to caramel apples is pairing a firm, tart apple with a sweet surface. Try apples such as Granny Smith, Lady or McIntosh apples for a sweet, tart taste. If you have a big sweet tooth, try Fuji, Gala or Golden Delicious. Avoid Red Delicious apples, which tend to lack the inner firmness needed for caramel apples.

                    INSTRUCTIONS

Butter a baking sheet, tray or use aluminum foil to hold coated apples. Set up dishes for each of the toppings.
Wash and dry apples after removing stems. Insert wooden skewers or popsicle sticks into the top of the apple.
Melt caramel candy in a saucepan on low heat and stir in 1 tablespoons of milk, water or cream. Melt until caramel is a smooth liquid.
Quickly dip apples in liquid caramel to coat. Roll the coated apples in desired toppings immediately after coating with caramel. Dipping must be done fast because caramel hardens quickly. If the caramel in the saucepan begins to harden before you’re done dipping, add 1 tablespoon of cream to the mixture and increase to medium heat until it liquefies again.
Place apples on a tray or foil. Refrigerate to cool before eating.
Tip: Bigger isn’t better for caramel apples. Choose smaller apples, which will be easier to make and eat.

Tip: Store-bought apples usually have a wax coating on them. If a farmer’s market or orchard isn’t nearby, quickly dip store-bought apples in boiling water to remove the wax. Then refrigerate until you’re ready to use.

Tip: Use colored cellophane and ribbon to wrap up the caramel apples so your guests can take them home as a tasty party favor.

                    SHRUNKEN HEAD APPLES
Once these apples have dried they shrivel up making scary Halloween shrunken heads.

This project can be used as a hangup up or add them to a stake in the ground. Add them to a bowl full of chips for a scary surprise.

Start by peeling the apples and then coating them in the lemon juice and salt mixture. This helps reduce the browning of the apple.

Using a knife carve out a face with eyes and nose. Keep it simple, a hole for the eyes and triangle for the nose cause as it shrinks you will loose detail.

You can stick on wobbly eyes, use doll eyes or just use a peppercorn. Add some teeth with some wheat or rice grains.

Place them outside in a warm area but not in direct light for around 2 weeks. To speed up the process dry them out in the oven on a low setting for around 30 Min's then move them outside for 24 hours.

You can even add hair to these by gluing on some craft hair or use some garden moss or dryer lint.
