THE NEXT DAY THREAD, October
I think that might be a bit old - here they were saying 60-70 in Tonga, and Samoan deaths are now at more then 200 I think.
I'll listen to the 5pm news and see what they say - we have a big Pacific Island population so there is a lot of interest here
At home marking essays today ........ is enough to drive you to drink!! I dont know how some of these people ever made it through school, let alone two years of University .....Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn

I must have got something wrong - they just said 150 in total. 110 in Samoa, 31 in America Samoa and 9 in Tonga. Here's the link to Radio NZ news
Radio New Zealand News : Stories : 2009 : 10 : 01 : Tens of thousands affected by Samoa devastation
And yes, Pan, there were some idiots who went down to the beach with their cameras ......Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn

Look, me being a photographer, I can understand why - in getting a great shot. BUT at what cost - your life as it gets taken away, along with your camera, which won't survive? Seriously.

THE NEXT DAY THREAD, October
Morning all.
I usually follow the BBC news, there were tremors felt from the Sumatran earthquake here in Singapore, and I've also been following the Tsunami and the tropical storm in the Philipines and Vietnam - lots of natural disasters at our end at the minute, makes you take a step back and think.
I like the idea of the clean sweep of a new month. My MIL dramas continue, but I've accepted she is how she is, have tried talking to her about the value of friends etc., and maybe being a bit more open minded, which I don't think had any effect, but made me feel better.
There is a positive that has come out of her visit - It's served as a timely reminder of the value of friends, so I've made sure I've taken the time to 'cultivate' my friendships, even if its just a quick text message. My MIL has been astounded by how many people I've bumped into to chat with here, met for coffee etc. I think she fixed her opinion of me years ago - (told Mr Sweats she didn't like me after our first 'meeting', which unfortunately meant we spent very little time with her), and hasn't revised her opinion since. I even thought about organising a big 'do' and getting as many people as possible around to 'prove a point', but I'd rather see friends in less stressful circumstances
Mr Sweats has taken a couple of days off to spend time with her, which I'm really pleased about, and I have some work this weekend, which gives me a bit of an out. Will try and fit in as many 'Singapore Experiences' for her before she leaves next Thursday and send her home with some good memories!
Good Luck to all with their October Challenges - watch out for the full moon this Saturday!

Good on you Bettty for taking such a positive attitude. Take her to see the orchids!!! Its hard when you have to interact with someone who has a fixed opinion of you.
Sorry I didn't reply to your last posts Pan ..... had just got a phone call with very bad news about my brother (his cancer is terminal, inoperable and untreatable), then one about my mother who was due to come home tomorrow, but who went slightly down hill this afternoon.
But I didn't drink any wine and I am going to get through all of this sober and without it. I'm going to have a bath and an early night instead. And a wee weep. Actually it will probably be a big weep .....
When this is all over I'm going to have a holiday!Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn

Mame - a big weep is a good thing. Sometimes it's the only thing.
Bets - only a week to go. I think MIL's a very unhappy woman. She just doesn't know it.
Rags - yes - bad news coverage but in the tabloids an ill-behaved sporting legend will beat a natural disaster hands down. Sad but a fact. It's up to us to find a better source.
Angel - you know you can do it. Even dealing with the cr*p that's come your way. Make Octsober YOURS.
Pan - nice to see you back.
Oney (sorry, cross-posted) and Shikakai - ***waving, saying "HI". ***
So Reggie is travelling at the mo, Wavey is waiting for his baclofen to arrive, Mr. G is in his usual zen state - Bridge? What's happening, girl?
Everybody else ok?

THE NEXT DAY THREAD, October
Good morning, all.
Beautiful day in Cape town today. Its going to be a balmy 24C.
Its the 1st time in longer than I care to remember that I'm looking forward to summer. Normally, warm weather would just make my flushed face and AL-induced sweating worse. Now I'm feeling cool, calm & collected.
Yay!I'll do whatever it takes
