Some great stories here!
I lost my 14 year old golden just four months ago and have yet decided what to do. I had her since she was a pup, and took her everywhere with me .. including work everyday. Needless to say, towards the end it got a bit tough because it was harder for her to get around, yet she was not used to EVER being alone. (except in her van when we ran errands) Hardto have a new pup at work, yet I have no fences on my property ... and almost feel bad about leaving a single dog home alone.
I am TOTALLY lost without her. Being single and having no kids, I feel like I lost my daughter. (another very covenient reason to drink too much wine every damn day)
She is survived by my 14 year cat, that used to wash her everynight when we got home. He misses her much as well. I would love to get another cat for him, but we have a real coyote problem where I live .. he is old and wise .. I am afraid a newbie would get eaten as all of my neighbors have lost cats.
Here's a side note ... with no intentions of trying to make anyone feel sad ...
I was reading a post here about someones husband who is very ill. Some were encouraging her to stay sober and not miss the moments ... I thought about my Kelly.
I have regretted the day I had decided to put her down here at my home, not because it was not time ...it was ...she had had a very tough weekend ...
I started drinking early in the morning and stayed shitfaced all through the day until the vet came. I lost that last day with her ...oh, I was with her, but I really wasn't. I wish I could have that day back without looking and feeling through the haze of the wine ...
Some of these leasons really suck to learn.

Waiting,
I did the same thing with my 15 year old Sidny. She was 1/2 Lab & 1/2 Lassa Opso, but looked like cocker spaniel(sort of- a short one!) she was my baby! She went everywhere with me! Work, kayaking, lived in a tree-house in Colorado for 9 of the years there with me, before I moved back to Oregon. She even went kayaking the last 2 years, when she was blind & diabetic... she just loved to go!
Unfortunately, on her last day... it was a really tough one for both of us... & I was here. But I was drinking way too much beer, trying to numb the pain, I knew she was dying, but i SHOUD'VE BEEN STRONGER FOR HER.The only thing worth stealing is a kiss...:flower: zwink:

Well, as you know, I have 2 young Jacks, however, my mother inLaw had a lovely fluffy Heinz ( variety). And when they went away on hols, we used to look after Bess, and when we went on hols, they looked after my Jacks. But... About a year and a half ago, I was looking after Bessie, and used to groom her every day because she had a really long coat and although she didn't like me poking around the downstairs area, I found a really large lump on her very lowest teat.
I took her straight to the vets and the operated. They came back 2 weeks later, that it was cancer, but because we had found it, she would live for many more years.
She died of cancer 4 months later.
You don't know what to do ... perhaps I excellerated the situation

Saint Jude,
I feel your pain! Dammit! Is is so tough ...
But having said that .. I sure learned something from it. And while I am sure I have lost many precious moments from drinking .. that one comes home to roost.
Part of why I am here . maybe you too? Sucks to have to learn that way .. but, hopefully we are learning .. and healing ... and will not make such mistakes, in the same manner again ...
Have you gotten a new baby yet? I'm in conflict on what to do! My home is not right without her .. but oh my, another pup? Another older rescue? Not sure .....
Maybe I will make her my avatar here .. just cuz .. she was part of what brought me to find this place ...
(which by the way, I feel like I have been forever ... is this really only day 2???)

Waiting, hey thanks for the nice reply.
Yes, I did get a new doggy! I waited about 6 mo. But with kayak season coming up... I knew I had to have another paddling partner. That's him on my avatar (the little black spot on the bow of the kayak!)
I got Bungee at the Animal Shelter, he's a Schipperkee, they're known as the "Belgian Boat Dogs", as they used them on the canal boats in Belgium, for guard dogs & mousers. I'll try & put a pic on here... wish me luck...
I don't it worked...The only thing worth stealing is a kiss...:flower: zwink:

very cool, waiting to exhale!!!! keep it up! Many have started with just pushing back that "1st drink time". Hey, it's a GREAT start and gets easier.
Keep it up! Sure keeps you from getting plastered by 7pm if you don't start by noon, huh? Sorry if that sounds smug, but that was me, and I've been beyond that point for months. It's wonderful! Stay close!

Gosh, I had to quickly do an avatar so you could see Suska. She is a retired greyhound from the Greyhound Adoption Program (here in Oz). Truly, I don't think she ever raced because she's only 2 and a real sook. I've only had her 5 weeks and it's great to have a dog again, after 14 years. Didn't have the energy when the kids were smaller. I had read that grehounds make great family pets - and this one certainly is! And having a dog forces me to walk every day, that's a bonus.
