    ADHD and Alcoholism, anybody else?

    Hi, everyone -

Is anyone else out there a diagnosed ADDer? I'm asking this for a number of reasons. First of all, I am one. In fact, the original reason for wanting to slow down (originally) and ultimately quit drinking was that I could no longer be prescribed Adderrall (a stimulant). My blood pressure had gotten a little high, and until that was corrected and some other checks done (for underlying problems), I could no longer take it. I always prefer lifestyle changes to more prescription drugs when possible, plus I don't have health insurance and my work is real slow right now.

The reason I bring this up is, I was looking at an ADHD forum similar to this one, and several people posted on how much they wanted to drink when their Adderrall wore off in the evening. Most of them were not even regular drinkers, and were now craving AL every night. Obviously, I find this really disturbing, since I found the drug made my life so much more bearable, and the 5 years I was on it were like a new awakening to me. I also learned that if you drink while it's in your system, you do not feel the effects of AL hardly at all, although your blood alcohol level continues to rise. I now wonder if this possibly contributed to my escalating AL abuse, though in all honestly I was a "self medicator" for 30 years before the ADHD diagnosis (also was not totally honest about how much I drank). I also never had any desire to nor did I abuse Adderrall, it was used only at the prescribed dosage to relieve specific symptoms, and does not give any kind of high to an ADHD person.

The good news is, there are other drugs that one guy said made him lose his desire for AL (he was also a self medicator previously), while helping his ADHD. Hopefully one is useful for my type of ADHD (there are several varieties, subtypes, and combinations of this stuff), and will work for me - without any AL cravings!

I just wonder if anyone else has had any similar experiences, and wanted to pass this information along.
