Going to the Yankee playoff game tonight and EVERYONE of my friends will be drinking. This will be my first game ever SOBER. We have season tickets and go down about 20X a year. Day 12 and would like to keep it that way. This is where it always gets sticky. I associate the game w/ drinking + fun. I have to stop thinking like this. My first real challenge (it's easy to stay home and drink lemonade and play n the computer). Thanks for listening to me guys.:thanks:AF since 2/4/10
Nicotine free since 3/31/10

Hi Sharz
Yankee fan here grew up in the Bronx. I have never been to Yankee stadium and left a game sober. This doesn't have to be your experience. First you have found this site and group of people with the same goals of getting al out of our lives.
If I had the information I have gotten here this last year I would have had more success years ago.
It would be so great to read tomorrow about you going to the game tonight and watching the Yankees win and not drinking.I know it will be hard but I know you can do it.
Enjoy the game. If it isn't rained out.

Shirazgirl,
A few weeks ago, on my 2nd day sober, I went to a baseball game (unfortunately not a playoff game!). I thought I would be fine - until I got there. I was really pissed off that I couldn't drink because EVERYBODY ELSE was drinking. (In reality, not everybody was drinking, though). What finally turned me around and got me relaxed was I told myself I could drink tomorrow. I told myself, "F%*K IT I am not doing this anymore. Tomorrow I am going back to drinking." A few minutes later I could feel myself start to relax and I started to actually enjoy the game. I went home, went to bed, woke up the next morning and continued on my journey to sobriety. Once I woke up the next morning with no hangover, no regret, no self-loathing, it was easy to continue on another day.
Hope this helps!

shirazgirl,
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on day 12. What a great accomplishment!
Secondly, would you consider not going to the game? I know we can't hide in our houses forever, and drink lemonade, and play on the computer but if you are not ready to interact in an environment that is a trigger for you, maybe it is better to NOT go. Until you ARE ready?
If you absolutely have have have to go, keep telling yourself you are NOT a drinker, and pack yourself a good variety of non-alcoholic drinks to take with you. Would an AF wine or beer help you? I know for some that can be a trigger as well, but perhaps it is enough of a cheat it will help you. Soda, flavoured waters, coffee, tea in a thermos. It is do-able, sober. Just make sure you aren't walking into something you aren't ready for.
Whatever you decide, keep close to those you get the most support here from to build up your resolve before you go to the game.
And more importantly, have a fantastic time :l :lStriving to live life without ALCOHOL

Thanks guys,
I went to the game. Everyone was drinking (I'm sure not everyone, but those are the people I focus on). There were probably more containers of beer there then people. I consumed probably 3000 calories worth of junk food (OMG, I feel like a baloon today) but I did not drink. Once I got into the game, I forgot about drinking. My very FIRST sober Yankee game. I remember every pitch, every out and the looks on the Angels face when they let the ball drop between them (0h my!). The bad news is is that I probably gained three pounds on junk food. The good news is, is that I woke up w/ a clear head, enough energy to run a 5K and happy that I was able to jump over this first major hurdle. Well, I'm off to the gym now, where I will pay my penance for my misgivings.
Thanks you all for your continued support. Day 14AF since 2/4/10
Nicotine free since 3/31/10

Hi shirz
Great News !!!! Yankees Win and shiraz has a successful night.Glad to hear things went well.Stick around and use the support of the great people here in turning your life around.Your success helps remind us with some AF time what the early days were like.
CC gave us a great effort and some sloppy play by the angels.Thought I was at one of my old softball games at Van Cortland park when that pop up feel in the infield.
