Progress Report: What's Working For Me ...

On Friday, I drank my last glass of wine. Ever. I know because I made up my mind. I have been reading this site every morning, taking the AVRT Crash Course (bullets for your beast) every day, and reading it again the evening before bed time to stay focused:

Rational Recovery | Welcome to Rational Recovery

I am down from 2 or 3 bottles of Chianti a day/night to zero. I am still drinking, but ONLY to stave off the worst of the withdrawal symptoms. I am drinking one tablespoon of brandy in a full glass of sparkling water or fruit juice (mostly pomegranate). No cravings at all, but my sleep is gradually returning to normal, I have a bit more energy, and the sweats and anxiety are tolerable with help from the 5-HTP, SAM-E, B Complex, L-Tyrosine and Olive Leaf Extract.

I am also now a HUGE fan of this supplement: SEREDYN - Immediate Anxiety Relief - Natural Anxiety Remedy I keep it by my bed for those lovely little 3:30am panic attacks. In the past, I have taken Xanax. Valium and Dilantin for same, and NONE of them worked nearly as well. I love this stuff!! It has really smoothed over some of the harsher bumps in the road— and without any side effects. My dad's co-worker's wife woke up with a panic attack, took one Xanax pill and went back to sleep. She never woke up again.

Because there is very little to no buzz from such a small amount of brandy mixed with juice or fizzy water, I'm gradually adjusting to life without that feeling. My biggest issue is boredom. I trying to keep busy and taking on some new projects. Progress is slow, but steady. Bonus: my tummy loves me again and my appetite is returning.

I hope to be AF by Nov. 1st and plan to abstain entirely throughout the month of November Thanks for the support, and especially, for steering me to the "Rain in My Heart" documentary. After seeing that, I can never go back to the way I was. That really was the ultimate turning point for me ...

    :thanks:

Thanks!! Will keep at it ... I hope once I'm completely over this, I can continue to encourage others. What a BEAST this thing is!! I have a dear friend who was addicted to heroin for seven years before he took up dancing with the Demon Alcohol. He says quitting heroin was a cinch by comparission, and still struggles with the AL.

We say prayers for each other's livers ...

          want2Bsober,

I'm very happy for you, thanks for reporting your progress
Keep yourself positive and by all means don't let boredom get in control - that was always a big trigger for me! This is a great time for you to revive old hobbies, try new ones, catch up on reading, etc.

Wishing you continued success & please feel free to join us in the Monthly Abstinence threads.

              Wantobesober,
Boredom. I too panicked at first when I thought of long evenings AF. Make a list of all the things I used to like to do and picked one or so a night. Now, I am used to not drinking and can fill my time with pleasurable activities. Do you want me to start a list, and maybe others can add things?
              reading
looking up new recipes and cooking them
talking on the phone to loved ones and remembering the conversation
              talking a walk
              exercising to an old tape
              listening to music
              making a gratitude list
              crocheting
              watching a sunset or sunrise
              cuddling with my cats
watching a movie with my husband, and remembering the ending

Now I look back and realize that I missed all my time off work because I was under the influence. NOw I remember and enjoy. Good luck to you, take care.

Hi Want 2 b, and welcome.
I reckon it's also very important to dig up why we are drinking/abusing ourselves, too. To change our thinking, and hence, our damaging lifestyle. For me, this wasn't alcohol abuse, it was self abuse. Just some thought's.
                Best wishes on your journey.

Red, starting a list is a brilliant idea. I am going to see if I can actually start a thread, and then we will hopefully get a lot of ideas from lots of other people. Want....keep going.
