YES! This is the programme for you new Australians to familiarise yourselves with the ‘language‘ of your adoptive country.
This week – we are going to look at a linguistic phenomenon known as
‘ Wogga Wogga ‘ or double talk. Not only just here but in townships as far as
Bindi Bindi, Kuri Kuri and Tura Mura – near to Sydney Widney.
The origin of this language, appears to be a German immigrant, named Wilhelm Nilhelm ( or known as Willy Nilly ), who was born in Baden Baden and later died in Pago Pago in Bury Bury.
In Wogga Wogga , double talk means that the last word of every sentence is either repeated – or rhymed.
A typical greeting, therefore would be ‘ G’day Ray ‘ or similarly you will hear ‘What’s on the Teev, Steve’?
A race track becomes a ‘Horse Course ‘ , and a Horse ( of course ) , a gee-gee.
By combining the racing and a barbeque, you can have a ‘ Derby Barby ‘
If, however you walk, and are English, you will hear the cry
‘ Going for a prom POM ‘?
Or if there 2 of you – ‘POM POM’
Or 3, and the one in the middle is drunk then ‘ POM tiddly POM POM ‘
NOW, we will finish by a small extract of 2 of Wogga Wogga’s favourite stars. Kevin Levin and Beryl Meryl. Obviously spoken in their native dialect.
This may I add has recently been previewed overseas in Hong Kong, Walla Walla, and Mill Hill . – Yet Woop Woop thought it was poop.
In this scene we must imagine the local Flock Doc ‘ sheep vetinarian’ who earns a dinkum income ‘ good salary’.
In he enters… ‘Well Well’ ( waterhole waterhole) Dust rust – ceiling peelin etc etc.
FINALLY a word of re-assurance, if you DO settle in Wogga Wogga, certain English expressions are not only permissible – they are actually welcome.
Included are ‘ tut tut ‘ , ‘chin chin ‘, ‘wakey wakey’, ‘coochie coochie’, ‘hear hear’ and ‘You Foo(LS)’.
