      Tigger World MWO Tour

      Hi Everybody.
I had a great day with Auntie Stirly.... we went to Athens!! That's the biggest city in Greece. And I got to ride on the Metro. Auntie Stirly says that it's called the underground or the subway in other countries. It was great cause it went so fast and got us downtown in no time.
Tigger, we went to so many places today and that's what impressed you the most?
No, Auntie Stirly, but I liked that it went so fast and the stations were decorated so nice... all those old things and stuff.
Ancient artifacts, Tigger, not old things.
Well it was fun and it got us to "Constitution Square" in no time.

Good for you, Tigger, you remembered what the square is called. Want to tell us a little more?
Well, it's right below the Greek Parliament Buildings and here's a picture of me in front of them...

      What else, little guy?
Well, Auntie Stirly, I was really impressed by the members of the "Presidential Guard" who stand guard outside the Parliament Buildings and the Presidential Residence.
You told me that they have to stand perfectly still and look off into nowhere.

That's right, Tigger. They're not allowed to move while on guard and not allowed to have eye contact with anyone. A good example is that a few years ago a protester at a rally threw a "molotov cocktail" at one of the guard houses next to a guard and it caught on fire. He didn't move not even one step until the officer in charge gave him the signal to move away. He would have stood there and burned alive because his orders are to always be motionless except during the changing of the guard which happens every half hour and it's done with very special steps.
It's very pretty there in front of the Parliament Buildings. They also guard "The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier".

How do you know all of this, Auntie Stirly.
Quite simply, Tigger. My older son was, and is for life, a member of the Presidential Guard. And you can bet I am very, very proud of him. Regulations state that the members must be over 1.85 metres tall, have perfect body proportions and perfect posture. The training for the precise steps and the way they hold and flip their rifles takes 6 weeks, 6 hours a day to learn. On Sundays and National Holidays, they wear a special costume. A white pleated skirt and a hand-embroidered vest that takes 1-1/2 months to complete and costs about 3,500 euro. Anyway, it is a special honour to be a member of the Presidential Guard but very hard work as well.
Where did we go to next?
We went through the National Gardens which is very green with lots and lots of trees and flowers.

And there was a "Turtle Pond" there, Tigger.

And then to the "Kallimarmaro Stadium". I think we should post a link so others can read about it's history.

Panathinaiko Stadium - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Good idea. And what did you see across from the stadium.
This very pretty apartment building that belongs to a shipping magnate and that Uncle Stirly was on the team of architects and designers that drew up the plans and built it.
That's right. Do you remember what was special about it?
You said that it has a swimming pool surrounded by trees on the roof and that all the faucets and door handles in the building are gold-plated. I don't know what she meant by that but the way she said it, I think it must have been really expensive!!

Tomorrow we will post pics of the Acropolis and I have a special treat for you. Now it's time for the Sleep Fairy. Nighty-night my little orange guy.... sweet dreams....

                    Tigger World MWO Tour

Tigger sweety, are you awake yet? That was a big day we had yesterday...
I'm awake Auntie Stirly. I was just wondering what the surprise is you have for me today...
First we're gonna post some pictures from our trip to the Acropolis yesterday. They turned out very nice and some people might like to see them.
Okay. But promise we'll do it quickly and then you can show me the surprise.
Agreed. Now, where do you want to start?
Let's start with that store with all the pretty things for sale that was in the Plaka....

Then how about the picture of the ruins at the New Museum of the Acropolis...

Those ruins are quite impressive Tigger, and very old.
Do you want to tell about how I lost you yesterday? How I turned my head for just a minute to take the picture of the ruins and you disappeared. Where were you?
Well, I couldn't see the Acropolis very well so I climbed up to get a better view.

You won't do something like that again, will you.
                    Nope.
Okay, let's continue towards the Acropolis... this is the ancient theatre at the base of it. Do you remember what it's called and what is so special about it?
It's called Irodio Theatre and the acoustics are so good that anyone sitting anywhere in the theatre can hear what they're saying on the stage.
                    Smart little guy you are...

I think here we should post a link for the Acropolis since we didn't walk all the way up there.
                    Good idea.

Acropolis of Athens - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And here we were walking down from the Acropolis and what is that we saw in the distance?

It's Mount Lycabbetus. Another very high hill in the centre of Athens. You get the best view of the city and the Acropolis from up there. I liked that path a lot. It had a lot of nice green trees...

And I like this picture, too - it was taken from down below and shows wall that goes around the Acropolis on the other side. The people who live in that house are very lucky. Look how pretty it is and lots of flowers and trees around it...

Well Tigger. You did a very good job describing our little trip yesterday and now I think it's time to go for that surprise I promised you...

                    Yippee!!!

You got that right Jan. I wouldn't have wanted someone to take a picture like that of my son so I didn't do it either. I still remember the first time I saw him in the uniform of the Presidential Guard. I got all teared up and started to tell him how proud I was and how handsome he looked and a little tear rolled down his face too, even though he kept his gaze at some point in the distance cause that's what they have to do. No eye contact. Not even when it's yer Mom

Okay Tigger. Here is your surpise.
It's called "souvlaki". Everyone who comes to Greece has to eat one unless they're vegetarian which you definitely are not!!
It looks really yummy and it smells good Auntie Stirly but it's kinda big.
Just eat slowly and eat as much as you want...

Okay. Mmmm. Thith iz weely yummy..
                            Okay, I'm finished.
                            Wot's happened to your tummy??
Well it was very good and I ate as much as I could. It was delish.

Okay Tigger. That's about it. Not much more I can show you of Greece cause your time here is up. It's time for you to take another bumpety, bumpety, swoosh, swoosh ride. I'm not gonna tell you where you're going. It will be a surprise. But I know you will have a great time.
Could you give me a little hint?
Well let's just say that you're going somewhere that I haven't been in a long time and if I could go there this summer, I would.
Okay, Auntie Stirly. I've really had a good time here with you and the Animal Crackers.
The pleasure was all mine little fella. You're just the sweetest little guy to go places with. Over the next couple of days I'll post a few more pictures of our visit to Athens so the folks here at MWO can see the lovely places that we saw.
You take care and make sure you post as soon as you get there.
I will Auntie Stirly, just as soon as I arrive.
Okay then, here's a big, big hug and off you go....

My Mom took my sons to the National Garden when they were young. There was a guy sitting on a bench across from them and he was reading a newspaper. Dad took the boys to get ice cream and the guy took that opportunity to hold his paper up and "reveal" the latest news. My poor Mom went off screaming to find Dad and the kids....
Luckily they've pretty well got things like that under control over here. Now if they could clear out all the drug dealers we'd be fine...
