When the Spaniards discovered Florida, they had to protect themselves from the Seminole and Timuquan Indians.
They used oyster shells to build forts and walls because they were so strong. Later, when the French attacked, the tabby walls just absorbed cannon balls...you could not blow a cannon ball through them!!

Mama thought this was a cool house...she would love to come live here. St Augustine is 30 minutes south of Jacksonville, and has a much slower pace. It is very artsy fartsy, and lots of cute bed and breakfast inns.

Mama said she had driven by here dozens of times, but never actually stopped. It is beautiful, serene and very spiritual place. She said now she a has her own secret garden and will run away to this special place when she needs to.

Jan, loving it!!, and you're such a trooper with the rain. St. Augustine is the oldest city in the US, and it's WONDERFUL for you to show us, regardless of the weather. Making me crave a trip!! Are we going to the fort??? Huh Huh Huh??? :H:H:H

BTW, I remember being down there with some cousins once and one of the boys decided to jump up on one of those oyster shell walls. BAAAAAAAD move! Shredded his legs like lettuce!!
