Stirly!! From what I've heard--Jim Morrison went to Paris to have kind of a "meltdown". He'd moved into a Parisian flat in the Marais section of Paris-right across the street from my ex MIL's house (I'm quite sure he was not aware of that fact, or he'd never have moved there!!:H)! He was trying to chill out and escape negative press in the States. Wasn't there an arrest and stuff about him exposing himself?? But anyway..I think he'd had a falling out with his family. His father only had the headstone put up in the 1990's. With a Greek inscription that reads "True to his own spirit". Can you read Greek? I know there was a lot of controversy over his estate because he left everything to his girlfriend Pamela. And then she died three years later from a heroin overdose. So it went to HER family. I'm far from an expert on all this--but that's what I've heard.

I read a bit about why he moved to Paris and that he was awaiting trial for a charge of lewdness in Florida. As for the inscription - I read, write and speak Greek so when I first read the inscription it confused me a bit . It reads
ΚΑΤΑ - against
ΤΟΥ - the
ΔΑΙΜΟΝΑ - demon
ΕΑΥΤΟΥ - self
However, those four words are part of an ancient saying which starts with the word ΠΡΑΤΤΩ which means I act. So the saying in full means I act against my own demons. In other words, I do what my conscience tells me is right which can be said in other words, as you said - True to myself or true to my spirit depending on your take on the phrase.
Oh, another thing I've discovered from your pics in the cemetery. Edith Piaf's last husband was Theophanis Lamboukas, a Greek man twenty years her junior. When I saw the name Lamboukas inscribed on her tomb, I just had to google it to find out what that was all about since it's obviously a Greek name. I'm quite the fountain of info today...

Stirly-you are a fountain of info!:goodjob: Your translation of the inscription on Jim Morrison's tomb is very interesting. The idea of him "fighting his demons" is so appropriate. He was quite a troubled youg man-but so brilliant. And pretty hot too! Very sad end to his short life.
