    Bot spider/spider

Just a quick question for RJ.

While viewing "who's online" I will sometimes see "msn bot spider" or "google spider" what doesn that mean?

    Bots

    Hi, Rachele.

Those bots (robots), spiders and web crawlers are programs with automatic scripts that search for information on the web. They index sites by following links from one page to another. You've noticed Yahoo, MSN and Google bots at work and this is very good for us. It comes on the heels of us "optimizing" this board. When posts are indexed, search engine matches are more easily made, which hopefully will result in increased traffic by those who need help.

By the way, personal info housed in our database is never, ever accessed; the only information scanned is culled from threads and posts which are publicly available. It's why we ask people to be careful about posting email addresses--because occasionally a site will be indexed by a spammer hoping to find new junk mail targets.

    Thanks for asking. :-)

    RJ
