I've been musing (uh-oh!!) about this last year and what it meant in my life. I find it amazing we have this wonderful gift of life, most of us tolerable health, beautiful children. We wake each day with limitless possibilities, regardless of our work, social, age, etc, situation. But what were the red letter days of 2009, and why weren't they ALL red letter days? Did we enjoy ourselves, laugh enough, spend enough time in the sunshine. Are we making the best of the situation we're in, or just surviving it one more day, hoping it will get better. Hope is the word we use sometime when we really don't believe it will happen. Sorry to wax on, here, but again, I digress.................Happy New Year to all. Make it a Happy one.

Lucky feckers. I've never even seen snow.

We're melting here. Its 36C and even with factor 40 kiddies suntan lotion, my bald pate resembles my colouring from my drinking days.

At least we're going to have a lovely braai tonight. Remember that 4-weeks matured (at the time) whole sirloin I mentioned to Starty a while back? Well, I never braaied it, and the big night is tonight. It is tender beyond description, but wasn't stinky at all when I removed it from its vacuum-packed time capsule. The meat itself is beutifully marbled, with an outer layer of fat of about 5mm on the one side, which will reduce and go crispy over the hot coals...

I'll be doing the sirloin whole, and carve it in thick slices just before serving, juices still running. Crispy and brown on the outside, virginal pink on the inside. It will be lovingly basted with olive oil, lemon juice, ground black pepper, finely chopped rosemary & crushed garlic as I tenderly coax it to readiness over the hardwood embers.

The fire itself will be made from a wood called "Kameeldoring" (Camel Thorn). It is imported from our neighbouring country Namibia, and results in long-lasting intensely hot blue-white coals which slowly subside into a dull red glow with a light covering of white ash.

Served with crispy potato wedges & a green salad.

                                I'll do whatever it takes
