    calories and booze

calories & booze thread could be a keeper!

I need to shed my Al fat as well... I lost 19 pounds when I first went AF... I did about 6 months and then started to mod and the pounds have crept up... I have a tendency to get depressed in the winter so I am going AF at least until the Spring...

Good luck to both of you on staying AF. Checking this chart out once in a while might give us some extra incentive towards sticking to our goal...

Hi Ladies. I read this thread, which I think most of us can relate to, since most of us gain weight from drinking and especially as we get over 40 :headbanger: I and it got me thinking of something I had seen lately and so I decided to make up a chart of caloric values according to what I?d read on the web. Note that with the consumption of 3500 calories more than you burn, you gain one pound of body weight. 7700 calories more than you burn means one kilogram for those of you using metric measures.
These are approximate average caloric values. There may be a slight difference between white and red wine as well as say between gin and whiskey.

White or red wine, (12% alcohol content) 1 oz. - 20 cal.
White or red wine, per bottle - 770 cc or 26 oz. - 520 cal.
White or red wine, per bottle ? 1 litre - 680 cal.
Beer, regular, 12 oz. can (UK or USA) - 145 cal.
Beer, light, 12 oz. can (UK or USA) - 96 cal.
Whiskey, Gin, Vodka, etc. (80 proof -40% alcohol content) 1 oz. - 65 cal.

So, if you drink a 770 cc bottle of wine a day, you will consume 520 calories a day. In other words, about 4.6 pounds or 2.1 kilos per month.
A litre bottle of wine will give you 680 calories per day ? about 6 pounds or 2.7 kilos per month.

If you drink regular beer ? 6 cans a day ? 864 calories per day which means 7.6 pounds or 3.5 kilos per month.
If you drink light beer ? 6 cans a day ? 576 calories per day which means just over 5 pounds or 2.4 kilos per month.

Five, 1-1/2 oz. glasses of whiskey, vodka, etc. without the mixer such as tonic or OJ, equals 490 calories per day, which means 4.2 pounds or 1.9 kilos per month.

So, if you add up all those calories from alcohol plus the junk food we tend to eat as we drink?.ladies, that is a lot of calories. Not that it isn?t for men as well, it?s just that it is a well known fact that women gain weight easier than men and have a harder time burning up those extra calories . And it is the general opinion that men are able to carry a few extra pounds and get away with it while us women are immediately labeled as being ?heavy?.

So. if you?re trying to find a good reason for cutting back on your alcohol intake?print this out and post it where you can read it. Might just be the incentive you need. Certainly, when we try on a pair of jeans that no longer fit us, :sigh: it will give us something to think about anyway.
          Much love,

With Spring just around the corner and Summer (bathing suit season) not that far away, thought I'd bump this up for a little extra incentive. (And not just for the ladies...)

Me too! 20 kgs gained over the last couple of years.

I have joined a fantastic gym and got a personal trainer. I am also doing the couch to 5km running programme. I love training. It really sets me up for the day and I don't feel like drinking on the days I have excercised. I go to the gym after the morning school run and I am determined not to sweat AL.

Although I am trying to eat healthily, I don't get to bothered if I go out. Conquering AL comes first.

Spam - I thought about getting a trainer. I've never had one - but as one who will find any reason not to work out, I thought it might be a good way to hold myself accountable until I was able to make working out a pleasant habit. Have you found it to be a thing worth spending extra cash on??

OK, I am a guy and this is all? women here but I have an opinion! Has anyone else noticed that when you give up AL, you actually have the clear mind to start looking at your weight (not saying people are overweight, just consuming bad calories), and overall health and fitness and actually become interested in making it better? I am not really overwieght but have a beer gut (sorry for the mental pic) and have been disgusted by it for a long time, just not willing to give up th ebooze to get rid of it. Since giving up AL, I have joined a gym and started eating healthy. I have lost probably 10 pounds and feeling really good about my health!

Hoping - glad you're here. Men aren't immune to fat from AL. I just think they don't discuss it as much as women do. I agree though - once you're sober, you can actually 'see yourself' in a number of ways you really didn't before.

                    Hi FG, Hoping and Spam.
Just wanted to comment FG on your post (quoted above) by copying and pasting something I had written in the calorie chart ...

"So, if you add up all those calories from alcohol plus the junk food we tend to eat as we drink?.ladies, that is a lot of calories. Not that it isn?t for men as well, it?s just that it is a well known fact that women gain weight easier than men and have a harder time burning up those extra calories . "

Of course men aren't immune to fat from AL. Indeed, men do get a "beer gut" as Hoping said and a "wine belly". It's a case of how that image is perceived. As I said above, it seems to be more acceptable for men than women to have those extra pounds...:durn:

I know Stirly - I've never thought it to be very fair that men can be "packin" and be considered a 'teddy bear' and I can be considered a bit fat . . . . .sort of like the age thing - men get 'distinguished' and women get 'old'. . . . it's a bummer.

                        Hi FG,

For me the personal trainer is money well spent. First of all though you need to find the right gym and the right person.

I went to one gym where the trainers were all "beautiful" and the manager only ever spoke to blonde girls under 21. I am now at a much cheaper gym with far more support.

I have paid upfront for 10 PT sessions and love it! My PT is a young guy, enthusiatic and caring. He doesn't seem to have any hang-ups about training older / bigger people. He just thinks health, fitness and a good diet is worth striving for.

On the downside, I am a bit lost without him. It's a bit harder to go to the gym and have a really good session on my own. I am going to use my time with him wisely so I can carry on, on my own, when the 10 weeks are over.

This time around I am very motivated. I got a bodybugg which tracks calories in/calories out. You have to log in everything you eat. What a shock when I started logging in the alcohol (close to half of may daily total each day)!! You also get to see how much physical activity it takes to burn off something you indulged in. 525 extra calories is just not worth and hour and a half stepping.
Hey Looking For Peace....What is a body bugg?? never heard of that..where did you buy something like that?? I sure could use that..I too need to loose weight and thought it'd be easier than it has been...any info would be appreciated..thankx

                            calories and booze

                            Hi all,

                            My few cents.....

When I go AF and consume less calories I burn off a tonne the next day because of all the energy I have not being hungover - so it's a Double Wammy.

FUNNY GIRL As for Finding a Personal Trainer...
I have been a Personal Trainer and Sports coach for 20 years. Yeah I know.... "what a hypacrite right? Like I have said in earlier posts. I have a dreadful secret and I am "Little Miss Energetic Health Nut" in my clients eyes. And I know deep down that is the real me. BUT alcohol really tries (and has succeeded many times in the past) to destroy that - That F8!%8ck5! Beast.
I have done a good job of drinking when I know I don't have to be really active the next day - because that kills.

I know the body and fitness well, particularly teaching running and sport specific training. Everyone is different and there are many styles of coaches or personal trainers out there. You need to find out the one that works for YOU. Do you want the intense soldier, the kind and encouraging teacher, the perfect Barbie or Ken or the well rounded trainer?

Just be sure they have had lots of experience - education and work related. Sometimes someone fresh out of university lacks the practical experience OR someone with no education or certifications may not be your best choice either.

Personal Trainers can be the ticket to get you started in the right direction. Once you see the benefits and learn from them, then you can continue on your own if you like or keep them as a lifer PT. Sometimes you just need someone with knowlege and encouragement when you are starting out. Plus knowing they are expecting something from you helps get your butt moving too.

                            Hope that helps.

May we keep losing or gaining to reach our ideal body - Men and Women.

Sisley, if you go to Welcome to Apex Fitness Group; home of the bodybugg , it will explain the body bugg. It's pretty pricey (about $200) but it really works to track calories in and out. You wear a monitor on your upper arm and then downoad the information daily into your computer for the calories spent. You enter the calories consumed daily and then get you calorie surplus or deficit.

The wine always put me way over. If it wasn't for the wine, I would easily be at at least a 500 calorie deficit daily... and I wouldn't be so fat! I'm trying, once again on the wagon.
