    calories and booze

Why is it that I pay very close attention to the calories in my meals, but am completely oblivious to the calories in alcohol?

Over the last few years, I have really packed on the pounds, about 30. I have hovered around 145 pounds for about 7 years. Over the last few years I have also been trying to get the weight off - to no avail. There is an average of 525 calories in a bottle of wine, which is the minimum of what I drink each night. So, on a daily basis I am taking in between 500-1000 empty calories... equal to the amount in one really good meal! Also equal to 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours worth of very intense step classes. Why am I putting myself through this????

Logically, if I just cut out something I hate myself for doing in the first place, I could easily loose 2 pounds per week and not change anything else I'm doing. Anyone have any advice on the weight aspect?https://www.mywayout.org/community/im...s/confused.gif

The pounds MELT off when you stop drinking ... I am right there with you ... count the cals on my dinner plate but used to pour a HUGE glass of wine...

In my experience, the weight will start to come off by doing nothing other than quitting drinking, as you have noted yourself. It can be deceptive how booze adds to our weight. For example, I'm not anywhere near being overweight, but during my longest AF run even I magically lost nearly 10 pounds. It's troubling to think that for years many of us have regularly added 500-1000 empty calories per day, and even worse, have augmented this by eating crappy food while intoxicated. At least I have, anyway:argh:

I'm with you on that one TW.

When I used to drink I didn't eat for days on end. So I ended up an extremely underweight drunk who looked about a 80 years old.

Since I finally gave AL the boot over 6 months ago I may have gained a few pounds (OK more than a few), but I feel great.

I now enjoy my food, eat a more healthily diet and if I want a treat I'll have it.

Thanks for your replies. The calorie factor started dawning on me in the last few weeks (since Jan 1). I am seriously ready to take this weight off. Maybe if I can focus on the calorie aspect of alcohol I will be successful.

This time around I am very motivated. I got a bodybugg which tracks calories in/calories out. You have to log in everything you eat. What a shock when I started logging in the alcohol (close to half of may daily total each day)!! You also get to see how much physical activity it takes to burn off something you indulged in. 525 extra calories is just not worth and hour and a half stepping.

I have gained weight since I quit too, but again I look so much better, was way too thin when I was drinking.
Trouble is I am still hankering to be the weight I was

When i finally made 10 days AF I joined weight watchers. Wasn't going to go to the effort if I couldn't give up alchohol calories, the salty foods that come with alchohol, and greasy foods that help hangovers.
i was stunned by my starting weight but have decided to be positive------- that i took the first two steps. So, i hope this is the year!! Tired of myself, Spanky

Great on the 10 days Spanky... I would love to keep posted on your progress. I had a great day yesterday, no al, eating right and excersize (although an issue with my son ruined the end of my day but did not derail me)

                    Good luck to you!

I am with you guys. I have gained so very much weight because of my drinking.....around 35 lbs. I look so horrible, have a closet full of clothes that I cannot wear and have lost alot of self confidence because of the way I look. I am determined to stop this madness now.

Hi Ladies. I read this thread, which I think most of us can relate to, since most of us gain weight from drinking and especially as we get over 40 :headbanger: I and it got me thinking of something I had seen lately and so I decided to make up a chart of caloric values according to what I?d read on the web. Note that with the consumption of 3500 calories more than you burn, you gain one pound of body weight. 7700 calories more than you burn means one kilogram for those of you using metric measures.
These are approximate average caloric values. There may be a slight difference between white and red wine as well as say between gin and whisky.

White or red wine, (12% alcohol content) 1 oz. - 20 cal.
White or red wine, per bottle - 770 cc or 26 oz. - 520 cal.
White or red wine, per bottle ? 1 litre - 680 cal.
Beer, regular, 12 oz. can (UK or USA) - 145 cal.
Beer, light, 12 oz. can (UK or USA) - 96 cal.
Whiskey, Gin, Vodka, etc. (80 proof -40% alcohol content) 1 oz. - 65 cal.

So, if you drink a 770 cc bottle of wine a day, you will consume 520 calories a day. In other words, about 4.6 pounds or 2.1 kilos per month.
A litre bottle of wine will give you 680 calories per day ? about 6 pounds or 2.7 kilos per month.

If you drink regular beer ? 6 cans a day ? 864 calories per day which means 7.6 pounds or 3.5 kilos per month.
If you drink light beer ? 6 cans a day ? 576 calories per day which means just over 5 pounds or 2.4 kilos per month.

Five, 1-1/2 oz. glasses of whiskey, vodka, etc. without the mixer such as tonic or OJ, equals 490 calories per day, which means 4.2 pounds or 1.9 kilos per month.

So, if you add up all those calories from alcohol plus the junk food we tend to eat as we drink?.ladies, that is a lot of calories. Not that it isn?t for men as well, it?s just that it is a well known fact that women gain weight easier than men and have a harder time burning up those extra calories . And it is the general opinion that men are able to carry a few extra pounds and get away with it while us women are immediately labeled as being ?heavy?.

So. if you?re trying to find a good reason for cutting back on your alcohol intake?print this out and post it where you can read it. Might just be the incentive you need. Certainly, when we try on a pair of jeans that no longer fit us, :sigh: it will give us something to think about anyway.
                          Much love,
