Most Afrikaans-speaking people are referred to as "Dutchmen" - a reference to the 1st white settlers from the Netherlands (Jan van Riebeeck) who established an outpost in Table Bay (cape of Good Hope) in 1652.

It is a derogatory term.

Interestingly, the street in which I live is named after one of the ships in which Van Riebeeck arrived in SA. The adjoining streets are named after the others.
