    Topomax day 1

    So it arrived today...from India...with Johnson & Johnson label on the foil. I felt really nervous taking it. Actually took 1/2 of a 25 mg. pill and then the other half later. Felt okay. No alcohol today. Hope this is the beginning of a new direction for me.
    If anyone else is just starting out, I'd love to hear how it is going for you.

    I am 4 weeks in and am doing fabulously. 4 days in and I was completely done drinking. Good luck to you!

      I have been taking it for a couple of months. I have only drank (is that the right word?) a couple of times. No major side effects or anything. My only advise is to be sure to titrate up. Don't just increase suddenly. I started at 50 mg in the morning. Then went to 50 mg in the morning and 50 mg in the evening. I am currently at 200 mg/day.

        Thanks Bellinator and Nora,

        Glad that you both are doing well with it. Nora, you said you drank a couple of times...did the alcohol hit you particularly hard? I am planning on having a glass of wine with friends on Saturday but don't want one glass to make me wasted.
        Any positive side effects? Weight loss is what I'm hoping for.
        Titrate is a word I've seen here but never before. I was planning on following the dosing recommended in the book. Is that what you mean?

          Yes - I followed the dosage in the book (I didn't know what titrate was either - I hate to look it up & I still don't know how to pronounce it )
          I have heard that it does make the alcohol hit you harder. Just don't go for the whole bottle. I haven't had any problem with a glass or two of wine.

            I am up to100 mg per day.....following the dosage in the book
            i have had some "topa dopa"for afew weeks.....feel forgetful and stupid, but it is passing....it was frustrating but it is passing....and for me yes...IT DOES enhance your buzz....but iwas stupid and overdoing it.....
            i have decided to go AF after a stupid drunken night on monday
            good luck....i think you will be happy
            a few side effects are much better than being an alcoholic
            I love my family more than alcohol.:h

              Topa can really stabilize you -- drink LOTS of water and stay consistent!!!! you'll do great!!!!!

                  Topa worked great for me. Was prescribed by my doc. It's the 'habit' syndrome you have to beat then.

                    Hi 4myHealth,

                    Would like to hear how you're getting on day by day. Let us know. I am thinking of asking my doctor for Topamax as you will see in my other thread.

                    Don't mean to hijack this thread but I have asked a question about getting Topamax in the medications section.

                    Would appreciate your comments.

                      HI 4MH,
                      Please see response I just posted @ Topamax - hairloss on the "meds" forum...
                      I got up to 250 mg/day before backing off. Topa was imported without Rx.

                        Thanks for the replies. I'm about to get on the treadmill and then will take my second dose, 2nd day this afternoon. Will keep you posted on how it is going. I suppose it is a little early to tell.

                          Well, a friend arrived tonight with a bottle of wine in hand. Couldn't believe it (this isn't really a regular event at my house...me arriving at my house with two bottles of wine in hand was normal, however). So, deep breath...pour her a glass of wine. Pour myself one. Leave mine in the other room. (She did bring hors d'oeuvres too.) Nibbled on food. Retrieved my glass of wine. Sipped my wine. (She finished hers before me -- also unheard of.) Poured her another. Sipped my wine. Poured myself another. Continued to sip and nibble. Sent her home with the remainder of the bottle (strange, but safe for me). Drank pelligrino.
                          So, not the original plan of abstaining, but didn't overindulge or head out to the store as I usually would've. Progress, not perfection.
                          Day 3 topo is tomorrow.

                            Hi 4myhealth - I started taking Topa in mid Dec and have done really well on it - I have been AF since around the beginning of Jan - only mild side effects - tingling in feet and hands and mild Topa Dopa (or is that age I ask myself?). I am currently on 300mg a day split into two doses, am and pm. I feel really well and for the most part, have no cravings - now and then I might think about having a drink - but it is just a passing thought. Good luck with it - I think it is wonderful!

                              Thanks for the details on your experience with Topa. Congratulations on your success with it! Do you know how long you'll stay on it? Is that something you know now or evaluate down the road.
