    Army Thread 26th April 2010

Yes, JC, and it's only noon here! At least I didn't wake up to a dead rabbit by my bed!

Once you have crested the mountain and start the descent towards Villiersdorp, the environment changes dramatically. On the Franschoek side, it is very "civilised" with pine forests, vineyards, fruit orchards etc. etc.

On the Villiersdorp side, you see the Cape as it used to be before man came along...

As you reach the floor of the Villiersdorp valley, you'll find the Theewaterskloof dam. It is used to supply part of the needs of Cape Town and the surrounding metropolitan area, as well as to provide irrigation for the apple and other fruit orchids in Grabouw. The dam is located halfway between Villiersdorp & Grabouw.

As you head into Grabouw, you get one last glimpse of Villiersdorp / Theewaterskloof:

From Grabouw we took the N2 national road (which runs all the way up our coast to Mozambique) towards Cape Town.

It wasn't a very clear day, so this piccie was a bit of a disappointment. It was taken at the top of the mountain pass you have to cross to descend towards False Bay. On a clear day, this is one of the most awesome sights - you can see all the way to Table Mountain in the distance with expanses of blue ocean...

We took the Gordon's Bay turnoff from the N2 and drove towards Strand. The only significance of this piccie is Jose's liquor store. When we used to live in Strand, that was one of the 3 or 4 weekend stops to replenish the empties for the week ahead.

We drove along Beach Road to eventually join the road back home again. As you can see, not really any swimmers in the water. The only person we saw was this lone kayaker.

And that was our little day trip. We never made it to MacGregor or Kleinmond ("little mouth") - a rather longer circular drive. That'll have to wait till next time

If you come September, you should be able to get a return ticket for about 600 pound sterling (sorry - couldn't find the British $ sign on my keyboard). Then I can also take some leave, because the cubs will be on their spring break
