Watch 20/20 tonight: Moms who drink

    Hello friends,

I have not posted on here in quite some time. But another MWO friend told me of the upcoming 20/20 show, at 10:00 tonight (EST) on ABC, about moms who drink. I am sure it will be "sobering" for many of us women. I am not a stay-at-home mom, but I have been working part time for awhile, and I have seen behaviors crop up in myself at home that I never would have dreamed of.

I do plan on watching this. Please post any comments here, and I will check back.

    Thanks,
    CS

Unfortunately I am in Oz so that won't be shown here..
I saw a Dr Phil show though a while back on the same subject (i know Dr Phil - what am I thinking??!!)

I was a stay at home mum who drank.. not something I am proud of esp as my son was only a baby.. but I got help and am pleased to put that part of my past behind me..!
I did hear that a lot of mum's get busted drink driving on the school pick-up run.. I guess they just get bored at home.. mine was a combination of just feeling overwhelmed and being with a man i did not love who verbally abused me on a daily basis...

Katie, if you are interested, you may be able to watch the episode, after it airs, on ABC's website, or possibly Hulu.

Being home with a child is so much more work than anyone has ever dreamed of. Working also; I get nothing done. It is very stressful. Not that these are excuses, but before I had a small child, I would have looked at these situations in horror. Now, no.

      Please, comments are welcome.

Same here Cs04 - I would have been VERY judgemental about the whole issue of Mum's drinking at home looking after the kids.. but now I totally understand... not excusing the behaviour but I can see how alluring the need for a drink can be when you are stressed, isolated, bored, etc..

Katie - I will look out on ABC for the episode just in case it airs over here..

Katie, good to hear from you. We all know how hard it is to raise kids...and how we do things to jeopardize that. It is also easy to hide when we are home alone (at least away from other adults).

            CS04,

Yes.. its not a happy way to live.. and you kind of excuse yourself, saying "i deserve this as I am putting up with my baby crying", or "i need this to keep me sane".. but at the end of the day, its doing the opposite.. it nearly made me go completely mad; i'm so pleased i got help (counselling at the drug and alcohol clinic at my local hospital) before anything too awful happened.. i'm still seeing my counsellor to this day..and am happy so say i never drink when looking after my son anymore..

I'll be watiching 20/20 tonight. I'm not a mother, but I have certainly run errands drunk. This is going to be painful to watch. I'm certain I'll be able to identify with the women being portrayed in this show.

Glad to hear that, Katie. Also glad you were able to get some medical help. The situation in the US is much harder regarding all of that. I wish you well, and feel free to PM me if you want.

                    Hi CS04 and KatieB;

Tried to see if I could get the 20/20 episode but it doesn't appear to air outside the US. I'm in Canada so it wouldn't come up. Too bad, I would have liked to see it too. Definitely used alcohol as an escape when I was raising my daughter too. I'm actually suprised she still loves me as much as she does....she has a heart of gold and somehow was always there for me no matter how horrible I got.
She's now almost 16, hates alcohol....no wonder. Maybe the only good that came of it all. I bought her and I matching silver rings last week and told her they were "sobriety rings" She thought that was pretty cool.

                      20/20 Women and Alcohol

I would think anywhere you live you can go to ABC.com and in a few days get this program.
I watched it, very good. As women we need to see this. I went to rehab for 30 days at the beginning of my drinking. (I was an alcoholic from day one) It says 90% failure rate with rehab for all, men and women. I completely agree, it did nothing for me but teach me how to drink. They told us what a stigma women drinkers carry. They did a poll with male doctors and rehab specialists and they all said they looked down on women more than they did men with an alcohol problem.
                      Anyway this speaks to women.
Please check it out and watch!

I'm not a mom either but I did identify with ALOT of the behaviors that those women displayed ( hiding bottles, drinking out of coffee mugs). Im so happy that someone finally shedded light on this situation and I wish someone would do more research on it. Im surprised Oprah hasn't done anything about this topic. The only thing she had on her show was about the mom that was supposedly drunk that killed those people on the highway last year. It was interesting that 20/20 said tonight that a high percentage of alcoholics are women. So that statistic right there needs some addressing IMO

                            I agree mysprss69,
These women need help! Even now in this day, women are still expected to be "super-women" - manage the house, work and look after kids.. i think society places more pressure on women to be "super" people than there is on men.. i think thats why some women drink anyway.. not enough support - either by their partners or by society/community in general.. I had to really search and search to get the support I needed.. but am still fairly isolated.. but at least I am not drinking anymore to deal with things,
