Jan here is some info on the company that runs this service 'spokeo' the safest way is to never give out personal information never ever.Spokeo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Okay, here's the deal. Spokeo.com is basically a search engine that aggregates information pertaining to individual names, email addresses, and phone numbers from online public sources such as phone books, real estate listings, and government records, plus profile entries from websites like Facebook, MySpace, Amazon.com, LinkedIn, Flickr, and many others (the Spokeo site lists upwards of 50 potential data sources).

Similar online services include Pipl, ZoomInfo, ZabaSearch, Radaris, and Intelius.

It can indeed be shocking to see how much information can be dug up about you in 15 seconds — your home address, your marital status, religion, hobbies, names of friends and family members, personal photos, a satellite image of your home, even your estimated income and credit score.

Just as troubling is the fact that no one fact-checks the assembled data, meaning it can be partially or wholly incorrect.

The thing is, if Spokeo can find it, the info is publicly available and can be found online by anyone, with or without the convenience of a Spokeo.com.

The website provides a form whereby you can delete your individual listing (though some users report that this is easier said than done), but don't miss the critical point: Simply removing your stuff from Spokeo.com doesn't prevent anyone from accessing it by other means. To protect your personal data on social networking services, you must either refrain from providing it to sites like MySpace, Facebook, Yelp, etc. in the first place, or adjust your privacy settings on each website accordingly.

And remember, if your phone number and address are listed in the White Pages, that information is publicly accessible online, as are various government records (accessibility varies by state) and real estate listings.

I'm not sure if this was made clear, but if you put the information into your profile on Facebook or the likes, even if you remove it later, Facebook (or the likes) retains that information. So the only way to make sure that information is not "out there" is to never put it in there. Adjusting your privacy settings will not remove this information from Facebook's hands. It will just limit the easy access to it by others.

Still, everyone is better off removing that information from their profiles, because then at least it is not readily available to anyone. It's just Facebook that owns that information (although they are probably selling it on -- I don't know about this part, just guessing).

Once your out there your out there. There's no going back! It's not like paper records that can be burnt or shredded. I'm even weary of these sites like Spokeo to be honest. They could be doing completely the opposite of what they say they're doing. It reminds me a lot like the spread of the H1N1 virus through making people fearful into getting a vaccination that actually does more harm than good. This could be just more misinformation you're being fed from these sites who are claiming to be protecting you. The New World Order is a reality, that's just my angle on things though!

Good point, hippie. I am also very sceptical of those sites. The best and only way to protect yourself is to never give that information out. If it's too late (as in my case with Facebook), the best you can do is to edit your profile and privacy settings and then never ever again give out any information that you don't want to be in the public domain. Yes, it really is a New World Order, and it is almost certainly more frightening than you think.

Initially, I put in my main e-mail address and it said I am connected to lots of sites, which is true, but there were alot on there I have never heard of. To get any further, you have to pay for the information.

Then I put in my hotmail address, which is in a false name. This is an address my son and I use if we want to sign up for something. It's a "dump" e-mail address. The town of residence was wrong and it showed the same the same sites as before, in the same order.

Then I put in my husband's address. Once again, the sames sites came up in the same order. And my husband has NO interest in FB, Twitter or anything. The computer for him is strictly business. And again the town was wrong.

However, I am not an IT expert. Remember there's also information about UK residents on 192.com and ancestry.co.uk
YEP Spam they did get some stuff wrong,
but on mine they had pic's of me and Ollie..big shocker...!!!!!
just think it's best for those that are not too up on things to be wary and I know I'm not gonna give up personal stuff anymore...

If it makes any of you feel better, my profile was 99% wrong. Outrageously and humorously off target. I'm sure anyone could have made a far more accurate profile of me by randomly guessing.

I was listed at an old address, in a different country, where I haven't lived for years.

All the personal details (except my estimated age) were completely wrong, including my likes and interests. They even got my zodiac sign wrong!

Also, two photos were shown, neither of which I have an inkling of what or who they are.

                    This was fun

                      More Spokeo info

I did searches for about 10 friends and family. The only thing that seemed to be consistently correct was location (exact addresses or at least the street name) and approximate age. However, Zodiac sign has always been wrong, which indicates an exact birthday is not known.

all I can say is I didn't like to see pics of me and my little boy on there and other info..
I have taken it as a lesson to be more careful with my personal details online..

and if that is all that has been gained by this, I am happy and I think there are a few others like me that feel the same...

I posted the thread to help..not to try to be clever or anything..

it did make you curious as well, as you took the time to research others you know..!

we are not all as IT up to date as others..

but if this thread helped for others to be more aware, then it has served it's purpose,
