Sorry, didn't mean to offend you yesterday. I'd be pretty upset if my photos were on there. Maybe I'm just lucky. I never get junk e-mail so perhaps I'm just off their radar.

    Hey spam honey,
    no offence taken..:l

I saw this info this morn on FB from one of our members and thought it was something that merits others in our site to have a look at.
    .
I'm just glad I found out about it and have learnt a lesson from it..

and some other have taken heed by it..

    "watchout, watchout,
    there's data thieves about"..

do you remember that old one..??
    but obviously slightly different words..!!:H

My problem is that my address keeps coming up on searches for my ex-husband and ex-fiance'. That is frustrating. The marriage is over for 16 years and the engagement for 10. I still get mail for these shmucks.

I have taken it as a lesson to be more careful with my personal details online..

and if that is all that has been gained by this, I am happy and I think there are a few others like me that feel the same...

I posted the thread to help..not to try to be clever or anything..

it did make you curious as well, as you took the time to research others you know..!

we are not all as IT up to date as others..

but if this thread helped for others to be more aware, then it has served it's purpose,

I'm not sure why you are directing this comment at me, and why you would feel I was being "clever" or flippant or in any way derogatory. I have been the one who responded to this post the most, with the strongest of warnings (and adding information that others might not realise, like that Facebook keeps your info even after you take it out of your profile). You appear to feel offended, perhaps just because I said it was fun? I meant that it was fun because it was a relief to find out that they didn't know so much about me. I went to the site in earnest and with trepidation. It was "fun" because I was relieved, and because the misinformation was humorous -- I certainly wasn't poking fun at anyone.

It always baffles me how easy it is for intentions to be misconstrued in written communication.

At any rate, my last word is, by all means, keep all personal information off the internet and erase any that is already out there if you can.

And try to find out what is out there and fix it if you can.

I think that is how the Spokeo is making money. They gather as much info as they can, and if it is wrong, or compromising in any way, they sell a service to help you correct it. It's not necessarily a disservice. It's a business. Just like credit-rating checkers. Also, if they do have real info that you don't want to be out there (especially photos), or incorrect information that could be compromising, it is good to know, so that you can do something about it.

It's also fun because it's interesting to see what they have on you, what influence it might have on you, and to try to trace their methods of gathering information.

And I'm sure a lot of people will be helped by this thread -- at least I hope so.

            VERY IMPORTANT:

As of today, there is a new privacy setting called "Instant Personalization." It shares data with non-Facebookwebsites and is automatically set to Allow. Go to Account> PrivacySettings > Applications & Websites >Instant Personalization and UN-CHECK "Allow." Please copy & repost this, because even if you uncheck this, if your friends don't, your friends may still be sharing info about you.

              Hi Beatle,
I was not having a "pop" at you at all..
and as you so rightly say the written word can so be easily misunderstood,
as of which this, is one of those cases..

I reiterate the only reason I started the thread, was that others like me should be more aware of how dangerous and open we make ourselves, by putting our personal "stuff" out there for all the world to get hold of..

when we post pic's etc to social sites we are very open and trust that there is nothing wrong doing so, coz we are just amongst friends, we think there can be no harm....

I stand by my intention to only help and inform those like me to be more careful..
