    KTAB,

could you post your soda bread recipe in the Recipes thread??

I have great memories of my granda's bread (am part of the diaspora - he was one of 14 from Tipperary!!) but I've been looking for recipes and they all seem very much more like a scone (baking soda rather than yeast) than the bread that I remember (which was made with a "bug" and possibly more like a sour dough).

Is traditional soda bread made without yeast?? His was always made with his bug which he was obsessive about .... less crumbly than the ones that I've seen recipes for.

      Oney, Thanks hun,

I have to keep telling myself that if I get turned down they are doing it for the good of the kids.
It could be worse, I could be filing.

You are dead right JC she should be ashamed, probably one of the people moaning about the government in a few months.

Hi Miss B, there is no yeast, you put in baking soda instead and must use buttermilk, if not then maybe that is why it is scone like? Great that you are part of our big global family. I will see if I can dig up a proper recipe (meaning I will ask Mrs KTAB)

Yes buttermilk is the essential.....maybe that is what he meant by the "bug"..ie sour milk...

JC, They would be lucky to have you....xx

ok, maybe that is the problem .... we dont have buttermilk here (in fact I dont really know what it is!!). Is it the same as USA buttermilk?

I've got a friend who was turned down for a job as bag packer at Tesco, she was so mortified that she thought of just buying a uniform and pretending.

And here is the recipe which sounds perfect.

                          Brown Bread

3 cups (12 oz) of wheat flour
1 cup (4 oz) of white flour (do not use self-rising as it already contains baking powder and salt)
14 ounces of buttermilk (pour in a bit at a time until the dough is moist)
                          1 teaspoon of salt
1 1/2 teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda.

2 ounces of butter if you want to deviate a bit.

                          Method:

Preheat the oven to 425 F. degrees. Lightly grease and flour a cake pan. In a large bowl sieve and combine all the dry ingredients. Rub in the butter until the flour is crumbly.

Add the buttermilk to form a sticky dough. Place on floured surface and lightly knead (too much allows the gas to escape)

Shape into a round flat shape in a round cake pan and cut a cross in the top of the dough.

Cover the pan with another pan and bake for 30 minutes (this simulates the bastible pot). Remove cover and bake for an additional 15 minutes.

The bottom of the bread will have a hollow sound when tapped to show it is done.

Cover the bread in a tea towel and lightly sprinkle water on the cloth to keep the bread moist.

Let cool and you are ready to have a buttered slice with a nice cup of tea or coffee.

i got turned down for a job at 'pets at home'. it was the silliest application form ever (quite funny really) one of the questions on it was 'if you were a pet, what would you be and why'. everytime i go into the store i feel like asking people... so what kind of pet are you then horse face/dog breath/rabbit features.... bitter me.... hmph yep
Today is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine
