                      My forefathers had to rely on dried food as rations as they moved into the interior of South Africa from Cape Town and other areas.

                      Biltong featured prominently as did rusks.

                        Dried meat is eaten all over the world I expect and I know it was a staple in the years before fridges and such. It just seems to me that it would be hard to chew dried meat. I just remembered that we used to eat a kind of meat "cigarillo" in Canada that was quite spice and rather tasty. Can't remember what it was called. It was good tho' because of the spices and such they put in it and looking back I expect they probably put extra fat in there to keep it softer so it was chewable.
