BRANDED AN ALCOHOLIC FOR LIFE.NEW NAME

I'm not ashamed to be an alcoholic and I'm really very proud to be an "alcoholic who doesn't drink".

If anyone asks I say I don't drink, if they ask any further I say I stopped drinking because it was going to kill me. Generally get a lot of respect for that. Despite what it may appear quite a few members of society hold recovered alchies in high esteem - to get through such an illness takes a lot of strength, usually because we have to look very deeply at ourselves. Something the majority of the world don't do but we HAVE to do it to recover.

    Lecture over.

only thing is they do label us..
      for insuance purposes etc..
when I was in the dentist today they asked me about illnesses & medicatons etc..
      and about any drug addictions.
I had to answer that I had, had a problem with alcohol..
so I was then classed as an alcoholic...!! (which I was..am..???????)

it just made me so mad when I told them I had stopped,
they said it didn't make any difference, as once an alcoholic that must be noted on the file as such...!!!
      Grrrrrrr

That's f*cked up Jan, I am labeled as one as you know by a judge who took words instead of evidence, so proving I am not will make no difference, even tho my solicitor said "maybe you do have a problem with drink but..." yeah he was putting it lightly, but I had this debate before and am so so glad it came up again

In their defence sometimes medical professionals need to know since they need to be careful with certain meds which may contain AL or be addictive. Also I've been told that redwine and AL in general is very abrasive on teeth, plus also can cause mouth cancer too.

They do have a duty and sometimes it might be as simple as protecting their own backs.

wise words as always mario, never a truer word spoken. only I know what i am inside.

people that are uneducated on a subject can be harsh judges. tell them you're an alcoholic and you'll never be anything else in their eyes. "oh she's a plonky" etc...

"i don't drink" is all those people who don't know me need to know. i'll tell a professional where appropriate. my life is mine and mine only. i have been judged and sniggered at all my life for being overweight, i wouldnt want to give the gossips something else to rip me apart for. it's a cruel world out there. those who love me know and care about me. thats all this girly needs. i don't need to scream my problems to the world in order to recover.
some people do. its our own individual recover/ journey xx

I had to accept that I was an alcoholic, that was the main thing. I think you've got to. But I try not say that I'm an alcoholic. I prefer to say that it's a disease I've got.

IMO For me accepting that i cant drink is the most important part, if that labels me an alcoholic so be it, dont have a problem with that.

it takes a hell of a lot for any of us to admit it..

coz it has such a bad mental image and stigma attached..!

but when we start to get better, we are told we will always be alcoholics till the day we die..

basically coz there is not another word to call us..

                                I personally hate it..

coz I am proud of what I have done and many of you are the same..

and many are struggling to get there,

but it infuriates me that our brand name never changes..

                                SO.........

I have come up with a new name for what I feel I am and we are..
it is so much more a positive "label" for us I think.....

                                ALCOHOLABSENTEE.......??????

                                Wot do you reckon..???
