    Army Thread 19th May

I, and my kids, are living proof that a switch is a GREAT deterrant! None of us were ever abused, but when we thought we were getting the best of an old lady, she'd just swing that switch and KATIE BAR THE DOOR! There's a HUGE difference between violence and creating a respect for who's the boss between children and their elders. We came from a different time. But though my father never lifted a hand to me, I would have never have defied him, because he was a man of honor and integrity. Making him upset was just not something I wanted, especially since I couldn't have asked for more love in my life than I got from him.

I used to get the slipper on the arse (amongst other things) but this was the only one my Dad did..my mother was a different story....those bloody rubber back slippers..hurt like hell, me and my brother used to compare bums when we were kids to see who was the reddest.

A very emotive subject Rubes and one I doubt that I am going to change anyones mind but DW and I decided never to resort to slapping in order to gain respect and control. Seems to me unnecessary and wrong to teach children that the way to get some one to conform to your wishes, is to hurt them, especially someone smaller than you. But each to their own I suppose.

NEVER any slapping here. It's the THOUGHT of a switch (I'm talking about a skinny little thing from a bush) plus the respect children were and should be taught, that scared us. Not terrified, just a wake up moment that got our attention to behave! Again, it's a different age and culture, and I've never hit my grands, and rarely spanked my kids, but they have not suffered in any way. My son told me recently we didn't spank him enough. I told him it wasn't too late. :H

I used to smack the cubs on the bum, but stopped years ago. I think it was misguided and based on how I grew up.

My father was a torturer, though... we had to choose between a thick or thin cane, and there would always be black and blue marks for days afterwards...

Ohhh, see, that's just not the kind of discipline I ever had, or did. Switches were little stings on our (usually) bare legs, IF they actually used it. I don't remember anything from anyone, except maybe my Momma. I remember one time saying something about her giving me a whipping, and she jumped in right away and told me she NEVER whipped us, maybe spanked. All the way back for generations in our family hurting their children has been taboo.

The fecking Metro trains are still not running due to the strike. I am now faced with the prospect of either leaving the office now and getting home late after spending 2 hours on the road, or sitting here and getting home late but spending less time in the traffic.

This is for Greenie; she didn't see my boy's previous bke wreck I don't think.

I know he's my 7th grandchild, after I raised two children, (yes, KT, I'm ANCIENT) but each one takes a special piece of my heart. We were ready to go anywhere we needed for him. Hubs and I surprised each other that when we realized we'd both talked to my Daddy, after our prayers, to look after his little reincarnation! The things they do without ever meeting in this life are astoundingly similar.
