      Hi Tip,
      From the link from Starty:

Critics of psychiatry generally do not dispute the notion that some people have emotional or psychological problems, or that some psychotherapies work for a given problem. They do usually disagree with psychiatry on the source of these problems; and on what the proper management options are. Word for the day is... DRAPETOMANIA!

"One remarkable example of psychiatric diagnosis being used to reinforce cultural bias and oppress dissidence is the diagnosis of drapetomania. In the USA prior to the American Civil War, psychiatrists such as Samuel A. Cartwright diagnosed some slaves with drapetomania, a mental illness in which the slave possessed an irrational desire for freedom and a tendency to try to escape.[31] By classifying such a dissident mental trait as abnormal and a disease, psychiatry promoted cultural bias about normality, abnormality, health, and unhealth. This example indicates the probability for not only cultural bias but also confirmation bias and bias blind spot in psychiatric diagnosis and psychiatric beliefs."

Good morning all from a glorious sunny emerald isle. Got a lot of work today but I would prefer to be pottering in the garden, that doesnt bring home the lentils though.

Starty - you might be interested in this link The Center for Mind-Body Medicine -- Dr. James S. Gordon, Founder

The guy that started it off is a psychiatrist (US) who argues that a lot of very human conditions have been medicalised as "disorders" of one type or another, usually mental health or behavioural. He is quite scathing about the role of multi-national pharmaceutical companies in driving up the reported incidence of these disorders - if you define something as a "disorder" then people look for a "treatment" (usually a drug of some sort) and a "cure". He suggests that not only do people then look for chemical solutions to differences in human behaviour that are on the outer edges of the normal distribution curve, but also mean that (because health services are "rationed" in some way in most countries) the people most in need of real help dont get it when they need it.

And on a personal level, his book "Unstuck" really helped me a lot in how i think about things, and developing strategies for doing things differently.

anyway, back to Under-roos for me! Hope you all have a nice day!
