    How can you detox discreetly?

    Hi,
I just happened upon this site through a web search. It looks like there are a lot of folks here who know what they are talking about, so here goes: I'm a 48 yr. old male who has been drinking almost daily for about 12 years (avg. 8-10 oz.). I will start drinking as soon as I'm home from my job or after a night event. I've tried to quit on my own several times but each time I get these horrible withdrawal symptoms.
Here is my problem: I want to quit badly but I need help overcoming the withdrawal symptoms. I am fairly well known in my community, so I would like to detox discreetly, at home if possible. I don't even want my doctor to know because I know him socially, and I've never had a drink at a social event. What do you think is the best solution for me?

    Thanks, Benji

    How can you detox discreetly?

    Hi Benji

I am like you, I have drank about 12 or more drinks a day after work for quite a few years, still managing to hold a full time job down, live in a relatively small town and am known quite well due to my work being in community relations. I did not want anyone to know, I have told my family, (husband and kids) but no one else. I went to a doctor from out of town and spilled the beans. I told him I still needed to maintain my appearance and for my recovery to remain private. I did not want to be drugged out.

He has put me on arropax (valium) 5mg when needed. I can still drive a car and do all the normal stuff. I have taken a week off work for the initial withdrawal period and I am now on day 6 and feeling O.K. My husband is still drinking, and when he does I watch T.V in another room, because it is still too much for me to sit there and not have one. The arropax will take away the withdrawals, but unfortunately the will power is solely up to you.

The arropax help with the withdrawals I was getting, sweating, tremors, gitters, and my eyes started pulsating. When I really start to feel irritable I try to do some sort of exercise: walk the dog, or if I can, go to the gym.

I know I have a long way to go because pretty well everything I did after work hours entailed having a drink in my hand.

Hang in there, and keep me posted on how your going.

    Rach

      Thanks

Thanks for your response. Your situation mirrors mine almost exactly. Only my wife knows.

I also have some similar symtoms, although no jittering. My hands and feet get cold and clammy, my head feels full, feels blood vessels around my head are tingling, high blood pressure, eyelids begin to twitch, all around bad feeling, restlessness. I know it is alcohol withdrawal because the symptoms all begin to go away after about the fourth drink.

I know that if I don't do something quickly, then I will begin to suffer some serious, long term problems, if not already. All I want to do is get off the stuff. It would be great if there was a way without having to go to the doctor, but obviously something like valium is the way to go, at least initially.

Did you call on a doctor who specializes in alcohol addiction or a family physician. I need to at least try the outpatient approach to see if it works for me.

Also, does this MyWayOut Program, address alcohol withdrawal, or does it mainly center on the abstinence part after you "dried" out?

      Thanks again,

      Benji

        How can you detox discreetly?

        Hi Benji

Before I say anything else, let me say that I think that it would be far better to get medical supervision for detoxing than to try to do it on your own, whether that means going to an out-of-town doctor or a hospital.

Having said that, apparently Librium is the "drug of choice" for withdrawal. For a home detox, an out-of-town doc is likely the best plan, if you can manage it, although they might be reluctant to let you detox at home if they don't know you. Your home-town doctor is bound by confidentiality, and if word got out about you, you would have grounds for a lawsuit!

If you can't get your hands on medication, some people have been able to withdraw by using alcohol itself, by drinking JUST ENOUGH of something weaker than what they normally drink (like hard cider) to keep the worst of the withdrawal symptoms at bay. Augusten Burroughs details this in his book, Dry. He went through an extremely difficult case of withdrawal on his own--DT's, hallucinations, feelings like bugs were crawling all over him, the works!

Either way, please plan to have someone with you, just in case you do need outside medical help.

We are are not docs and nurses here. We can only share from our own experience or from what we have read/learned. This program is for people who are trying to cut down or stop drinking, and although we try our best to help people who are trying to detox, THIS IS NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL ATTENTION!

With that in mind, Benji, I wish you all the best of luck, whatever you decide to do. Please keep your safety in mind above all else. Your reputation won't be worth much if you're dead from withdrawal.

        Hugs,

        Kathy:l :l

          A big thank you

          Rach and Kathy,

Thanks again for your responses. I've really become quite desperate, to tell you the truth. This comes at a time when I'm in a significant leadership position within my company and I'm worried how the disclosure will affect my ability to direct those under my supervision, and also how it will determine whether,in the future, I will be able to lead the company or not. It has never been a problem before, but now I'm starting to have these terrible symptoms at work. So now it's crunch time and I've got to make a decision about what I will do. Your advice has been invaluable. If anyone else has practical advice that has not been mentioned in the previous two reponses, I would certainly appreciate it!

          With much thanks,

          Benji

              How can you detox discreetly?

just received xanax from my doctor

              Hi again,

Just want to give you an update. I went to my family doctor and told him I was having some anxiety/stress problems. He prescribed Xanax, noy Librium or Valium, 60 ct., at .25 mg.

I will not drink at all while taking this med. I understand it is a benzo like the others, just shorter acting.

Do you think this can work to minimize withdrawal symptoms? How many a day to do this the trick for the average person?

              Thanks again for your help,

              Benji

p.s. I figure I can order the supplements on this program after I've weaned myself off the alcohol. Hopefully this will help prevent future cravings.

                Order Now, Benji!

                Hi Benji,

I would recommend that you get a hold of Augusten Burrough's book Dry and read the part where he detoxes by himself to give yourself an idea of what you may be in for. Are you thinking of doing a detox or just weaning yourself off slowly? If you are going to wean yourself off, please watch out that you don't end up cross addicted!!!

I don't know that much about Xanax, so I can't provide any real advice there, but you can certainly find out more about it on the internet.

I recommend you order the supplements NOW, so that you have them ready to go when you get the alcohol out of your system. No sense having to wait for them!

Good luck, Benji, keep us posted!!

                  Detox

Hi Benji. I hope that all is going well for you. I am not a dr but , have studied naturopathy and read much about this, as well as having basic medical training of the normal bent so please take this as you will. In my opinion, you should begin to take 1,000 mg of vitamin C at least 5x daily and also, 500 mg of niacinimide (minimizes flushing) 3x daily to help with the detox. I would also add 100 mg of milk thistle 3x daily for liver support and 1,000 mg of l-glutamine 3xdaily for the same reason. Magnesium will also help with your detox and any shakes. Please take care and try to do what is best for you, but if you find yourself in jeopardy, go to a clinic anonymously and see a doctor to help you through. Also, try tapering down rather than going cold turkey if you need to which can ease your withdrawal. The withdrawal period lasts between 48 hours and 7 days. After 7 days, your blood has been able to completely clean itself, although it will take approximately 7 weeks for your liver/kidneys to really get clean.

                  All the best!

Benji, I just read that the Xanax has a shorter half life than Valium and stays in your system for a lot less time. Please go read the thread "Zoloft and Xanax" under the Research section of the board, okay?? Valium might be a better choice, even if you have to order it online.

                      supplements

cv1, Thanks, I'm going to go ahead and get the supplements. Kathy, How can you order Valium online? Is there a good website for this? What should the daily dosage be if you've been drinking approx. 10 oz. daily for the last 10 years? Although I've cut back to 6-8 oz. over the last two weeks, trying to quit.

                      Thanks a bunch, Benji

                        How can you detox discreetly?

I don't know the sites, Benji, but there are a number of threads in JUST STARTING OUT from members trying to get meds online. You could go on there and start another thread to ask. I know there are online pharmacies in Canada and the UK that just ask for your doctor's name. I haven't had to do this because I live in a big city, and I didn't have to deal with a big detox. I don't know what the dosage should be, either, but you might be able to also research this online.

I'm glad that you have cut back. That is a good start already!

                        Good luck!

Benji, Kathy is completely correct about going to the Starting Over, or you can Google "alcohol withdrawal"+valium+dose and find some sources.

Here is the dosage information link for you. Perhaps, with the Valium, you may be able to get a short prescription from your doctor and not address the reason that you want it?

I'm receiving such great information from this site, I've decided to register! I can't tell you how helpful your information is, asking things about alcohol addiction I don't even talk to my best friends about. I just ordered the book DRY from Amazon.

Concerning the supplements, do you recommend the most expensive package. Do you start off with the full dosage recommended? I'm not concerned about the money difference.

                              Thanks, Benji
