    Weekend Binge Drinker

    Hi all.

I only drink on weekends, but when I do I usually get carried away and binge drink until I am drunk. This is causing a lot of problems in my life and I also feel really bad about it so I will like to try l-glut to stop the cravings. I am not sure if I should take it during the week since I don?t have the urge to drink at all or if I only need to take a large dose when I wake up on Sat. I know a lot of people here loves and swears by l-glut so any help will be greatly appreciated. I really wish I can just have willpower to control the drinking on the weekends like I do Mon-Fri but that is another conversation

    Thanks

I'm not sure how great L glut works in terms of moderating. Because when you've already had a drink or two and that buzz is there, that' what'll probably keep you going?! The urge to bring things to finality? Drink untill your drunk?!

No experience with this. Only as I understand it L Glut curbs your craving for Carbs and therefore helps with the craving for AL. But that I understand is in a scenario where you are doing some AF time.

So is your aim to keep drinking on teh weekends but keep moderating basically? So just have that 1 or 2 drinks instead of the 10 or 20?!

The journey is the goal. As long as you're fighting the good fight and you're not giving up on giving up, you're winning. It's not about how often you get knocked down, it's about how often you get up again. Sobriety the goal for sure. But striving to get to that goal is what it's about. Not getting there. Because the journey never ends. The journey is the goal.

        Thanks for your response Johnnyh

Yes my aim is to cut back on weekends to 2-3 drinks but honestly if I stop drinking completely that will be a huge blessing. Before my 5 AF days I never thought I would say I want to stop drinking because the thought scares me, but now I think if that is what happens then I am ok with it.

I think I am going to pick some l-glut up today and start taking it during the week even if I dont drink so when the weekend comes I will be ready.

Hi, Finallyfree - My advice is take the L-Glute all week. You may have to adjust the amount up to find the optimum amount, but it is safe in large quantities. You might want to also add kudzu. I found the same thing with that, you have to play with the amount to see what has an effect. It was a lot more than what the bottle I had recommended as a dose. There have been studies done on it as far as it being effective reducing drinking (you can Google this and I'm sure it has more detailed information on amounts).

I've read here on this forum that the MWO version is superior to the store bought kind, which is what I used. I don't know if the dosage or concentration or whatever is different. The kind I had I bought at Whole Foods and Sprouts, and was from a company that makes a lot of herbal supplements, but I'm real bad with things like brand names - it is a white bottle with lots of bright green on the label.

Be aware a big part of any of our drinking patterns is habit. This is something I figured out going AF, even after the cravings are gone. Whether it's going out every Saturday night and getting plastered, or drinking at home or whatever. I personally can't moderate, but I am guessing some of the same issues might come into play. There are some moderators such as Eve11 and Sunbeam who are knowledgeable on this.

If you do believe it would be a huge blessing to quit completely, that is something to seriously consider. I don't know how old you are or how long you've been drinking. It is easier to quit without the physical dependence to deal with. I sometimes think of "what if" I had done it at an earlier age (or rather stuck with it). I knew way back I really should avoid alcohol, and a few times did take advantage of a really nasty hangover to lay off for a few days, and a few times decided to stay AF, and did for awhile. I always came back to it though ("just one" - right!). The tricky thing about any drinking problem is we don't know when we cross the line to physical addiction. Another thing I see a lot of here is women's drinking escalating sharply in their 40s-50s.

Anyway, I do wish you luck whichever way you choose to go. Take care. :h

I just went out and bought l-glut and the powder form is sooooo much cheaper than the pills. I will take one tsp (4500mg) a day and see how that goes - may increase if necessary. I also think that alot of my drinking is habitual as well and I am so used to drinking on the weekend that it is hard to stop. Will keep trying and not give up!

              Sounds like a good plan!

Hey Finally Free. Was out all afternoon yesterday so sorry for only responding again now.

If you're willing to, go completely AF. That'll be the best choice you'll ever make. I don't think having 1 or 2 drinks justifies the risk of slipping and going on a binge again.

There are so many more upsides to being AF then the upside of that 1 or 2 drinks if you think about it.

                    Hi Finallyfree

Just wanted to ask if you thought about "why you only want to drink on the weekend"? I can see that getting the L-Glut is a good idea but may I suggest you also look at the answer to this question as well. Is it because your life on the weekend is not what you really want it to be? Do you get drunk to fill the boredom, or so you fit in socially, or some other deeper issue that you are struggling with?

Just a thought, as this was the deeper issue for me that caused my drinking to get worse and worse. I needed to recognise that I was very unhappy before my desire to drink could be properly understood and therefore worked on in a healthy way.

Good luck on finding your answers
                    Hope this helps

maybe you could try not drinking for a couple of weekends, see how you feel.
Today is the tomorrow i worried about yesterday and it turned out fine

great thoughts, hazeleyes. I think I drink to fit in socially. But then why do I drink alone? Do I fit in socially if I am always the most blotto of the group? Is this the best self that I can project to those that I love (and like)? Thanks for posing the question. It made me think......

Yes the second question is the big one. You say you get really, excessively drunk. More so than anyone else - so do you contribute/fit in when you are in that state? For me binging meant getting as much down my neck as possible, and during that time I really wasn't concentrating on what others were saying.

Sadly, most of the time yes, because our main social group are big drinkers. They are all lovely and I adore them all, but drinking is a huge focus. LOL.... sophisticated drinking....Expensive wine, high end cocktails, etc. And I am by no means the only one who overdoes it. But from what I have seen, I am the only one who then keeps on drinking even the next day. I think most of them can drink more than me too before really showing the effects. Anyway, this is not about them, it is about me. So I like anything that gets me thinking and especially thinking differently. Thanks for the support. I am accumulating the days and in two days I will have 30. For me, an accomplishment! prancy
