    Obama promised to get back with the Govt. of Arizona today.

    Like all other promises he's made ....he's failed ! Imagration is a big problem....Oboma needs to step up and do something. We are being terrorized by the Drug cartels, Human smugglers.....and who knows who else....I'm Hispanic..my family came to this country the legal way....we need secuirty ! IAD

    My family came over the old-fashioned way, too, IAD. I'm of Norwegian and Irish background. The Irish side came over in 1847 (really bad famine year), the Norwegians came over in the early 1900's, due to economic issues. Fairly recent.

    What do the other members of your family think about the whole Arizona/illegal immigration issue? I'd be sincerely interested in your view point. I'm curious to know how other legal hispanic immigrants feel about this, if you have the info and if you feel like sharing.

      I lived in Arizona for many years before moving back east (corp relocation). I still have family there in both the Phoenix area and down in Tuscon. The state is in big trouble. The Feds have done zilch....

                  My family came the old fashion way also. One ancestor on the Mayflower, and they were particularly hated by the locals given their little issue of killing locals off for land. Darn those local people who wanted to live. For me, it's five generations on all sides, and 10 generations to the oldest side. Not a single legal immigrant among them. I'm 100% illegal.

                  I suppose if this movement takes root, I'd have to move back to Ostfriesia where my people came from. Does anyone give Ostfriesian language lessons?

                      Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to accept this new kind of immigrant any longer. Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States , people had to get off a ship and stand in a long line in New York and be documented.

                      Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their new American households and some even changed their names to blend in with their new home.


                      They had waved goodbye to their birth place to give their children a new life and did everything in their power to help their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. Al l they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.


                      Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out. My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight over from Germany , Italy , France and Japan . None of these 1st generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country their parents had come from. They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as one people.


                      When we liberated France , no one in those villages were looking for the French American, the German American or the Irish American. The people of France saw only Americans. And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into one red, white and blue bowl.

                      And here we are with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm sorry, that's not what being an American is all about. I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life. I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.


                      And for that suggestion about taking down the Statue of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about
                      dismantling the United States just yet.

                        And BTW, when my family came in 1622, they were met by the rest of my family ancestors and my husband's. This is not about how things were done in different eras; it's about respect, and some semblance of security now.

                              Ruby I'm sure you mean every word.

                              No one in Arizona is accusing British or Australians, or French, or Ukrainians or Russians of overstaying their visas and being here illegally. Only Mexicans get their attention. This is simple prejudice.

                              Here in Portland Oregon, we have suffered from the fundamentalist churches importing 100,000 Ukrainian born Russians. Apparently their home country is too "liberal" and they don't feel comfortable with the concept of allowing women to disobey 1 Timothy 2:11. So the fundamentalist churches here in the northwest arranged to bring them in, "legally" as religiously prosecuted people. It was an attempt to swing the vote in a liberal strong haven.

                              The Ukrainian story is complex. These are Russian people, who were moved back in WWII days by the Soviet Union. They were planted in Ukraine to swing the vote, and put a Russian footprint in the country. Now that Ukraine is independent, the third generation Russian speaking people are a prosecuted minority. They can't go back to Russia because after three generations, they never lived there. They seek to move forward. Coming to America sounds great, especially when assured there are fundamentalist Christians who will sponsor their citizenship.

                              It backfired. The Ukranian women don't really like 1 Timothy 2:11. They like getting educated, reading newspapers and, God forbid, talking back to their husbands. The LURV America. Their husbands realize it's a one-way trip. Our city realizes we suddenly have Russian gangs, Russian crime and a whole lot of people who don't know a speck of English living inside of city limits.

                              Do you care? No, they are "white people". The whole "immigrant problem" lies solely with brown skinned people. Right? Even, the ones who were born here prior to 1622 who happen to be the only true legal citizens of our continent. Right?
