    mmmmm

my beloved Betty (cat) is a hunter and we live on the edge of a native reserve (plants and birds). (Our other cat, the main coone, is not in the least interested in hunting and prefers the indoor life). I have put collars with bells on Betty, but she manages to get them off in 24 hours. Mostly she catches mice and rats, which is good as they are predators for native birds, and it is good to get their numbers down, but every now and then (like today) she gets a bird, and today it was one that is somewhat endangered. Am very grumpy with her as a result....... even more so as she has made herself comfortable in the washing basket that has all the nicely folded clean clothes in it!

Having a very domestic night tonight, radio on in the background while I have been cleaning and baking and Radio NZ has a "Celebration of Australian Sheilas" night on.!! We've had Helen Reddy, Olivia Newton John, Renee Geyer, Dawn Fraser, Julia (of course!) and lots of others. I'd like to nominate Tawny, Bridge, Ficks, Beagle, Katie and Angel. And any other Aussie sheilas I missed.

        OK Aussies,

Now I'm gonna get on my soapbox. This is something I'm very passionate about. Some years ago, when i was just a teenager, a good friend of mine died from a drug overdose - heroin. At that time in our country any kind of drug use was frowned upon to the point where there was no medical help available and people were treated as criminals if they sought help. In fact the mental health system was even worse. Hangover from 1950's.

It was nuts as most teens were doing any kinda drug available at that time as well as coping with all kinds of other crap. It was the era where nobody would recognise child abuse - people got put into mental institutions if they admitted to being any kind of victim. Remember Chelmsford. Parents who tried to help their kid by phoning doctors ended up losing their kids into the mental health system and they ended up EST victims and brain dead anyhow.

So... some people got together who had loved ones that had died from drugs and formed a group called the 'Australian Drug Law Reform Foundation'. At that time I was a grassroots legal worker and did some voluntary work for them. This is going back 15 years? Anyhoo, they eventually evolved into another org - friends & families or something.. can't find the name but am sure it's on the website below.

Is anyone interested in becoming a member of this organisation? Here is the link below. Don't be scared.. the first page is about ice - i just went to a group the other night and there was a girl who had been on ice for nearly 10 years and she is 3 months free. She's not even 20 yet. She's got her brain back (almost) and is gonna study!

        DIRECTIONS ACT

These guys are awesome and I think all of us Aussies should support them and if we ever DO get a bus, it should have their logo on it. I am constantly inspired by them.

Their motto is something like "medical attention iis a basic human right" and everyone should have that without judgement. That's something that is just not available in Australia anywhere else as far as I know.

It's a real problem Fic. Mostly swept under the carpet I'm sorry to say. I've seen the results first hand. The worst thing about it is that there is nowhere to take them when you catch them. Hospital for the very sick ones...but the rest? Nowhere.
Unless they are doing crime, in which case it's the cells 'til court the next day. The rest have to shift for themselves. What's needed is a secure half-way house where they can be kept and treated 'til they go on a programme. Unfortunately being drugged is not a crime
and they can't be compelled. Dunno what the solution is. As for being personally involved with them...I'd rather run a mile.
            Not much help really.

Well ya know Blue, i've had a funny life an known a lot of people in trouble, specially working in community based legal.. but another example is top tier lawyer or cop who has trouble with benders... they cant access help without compromising their credability. You should know havin been with the force.
got to get past the prejudices.

Well Fic, I can't add anything useful to the drug thing. Even thinking about it revolts me. The unbelievable hoplessness of some of them and the filth and squalor they live in has to be seen to be believed. Until I went into some of their squats I thought turning over a brothel in the daylight was as bad as it got. Ha! A walk in the park by comparison.

I'd sooner talk about cooking. What is your signature dish?

My ex was a fireman. bad man in many ways but i did fall for him for his fireman fighter spirit.
I'm a bit squeamish meself these days but hell.... still committed to human rights
Understand completey that is all very confronting. Police, Ambos, Fireo's have to deal with the really deadly stuff. It's not your fault,l it's the Freakin medical/legal system or lack thereof.
Nuff said.. onto next question which i think is restaurant related

I have just got my son 34yrs back with me and feel his brain is totally screwed!

It breaks my heart to see him this way as he is a gorgeous sensitive guy but has lost his way.

It is so hard because he is aggressive (sp?) with me and his moods are so up and down.

He needs more help that I can give him but with mental health unless they hurt you or themselves our hands are tied.

                              Totally heart breaking and unfair!!!!
